Mat Latos, Sean Marshall, and Ryan Madson. I would have never dreamed the Reds would added even two of those players, let alone all three.
I had been down on Walt since the trade dealine inactivity in 2010. He has really made 3 (!) nice moves this offseason.

I'm glad Bob made this investment in the team. I hope attendance is way up next year and the Reds generate a lot more revenue.

I'm tired of reading every off season how the team can't sign any meaningful free agents and supposedly won't do anything significant.

Nice work, Walt.
The Reds have had ~$10M to spend this offseason. They just haven't spent it until now.

Ryan Madson deal is for $8.5M for one year, source says
Madson lost a game of musical chairs. I am guessing he decided to go on a 1 year deal so he can reenter the market next offseason. This works out well for both sides.

This has been a very exciting month to be a Reds fan. The Cards & Brewers took hits and the Reds made aggressive moves. I think the Reds are a 90+ win team and the favorites on paper to win the NL Central this year.

$8.5 for a closer like Madson with no long-term guaranteed money? Jeeze, that's some shrewd work by Walt.

That's exactly how I feel about it.

Re: Reds Sign Ryan Madson

Bronson Arroyo - 6'4"
Homer Bailey - 6'3"
Andrew Brackman - 6'10"
Bill Bray - 6'3"
Aroldis Chapman - 6'4"
Mat Latos - 6'6"
Ryan Madson - 6'6"
Sean Marshall - 6'7"
Nick Masset - 6'4"
Logan Ondrusek - 6'8"

Probably won't see too many guys charging the mound against this pitching staff.

Can we, in that time, use that leverage to sign Sean Marshall to an extension at less-than-closer rates? And then turn him into our closer in 2013? And get draft picks when Madsen signs elsewhere?

If so, $10m is a fricking bargain....

Rick
Nice post. That's a good plan.

Fantastic news.. describing myself as pumped is an understatement.

January 10th has been kind to the Reds lately. That's the date Aroldis Chapman signed two years ago, and now Ryan Madson.

Re: Reds Sign Ryan Madson

I was in the minority that thought the bullpen was OK as is as long as the starters did their job, but this makes it the best pen in the NL IMO. So, good that I think they could deal a reliever or two for help in LF.

Great job by Walt waiting out the market.

Re: Reds Sign Ryan Madson

Just finished reading the good news.I would selfishly like to take this opportunity to ask fellow Redzoners for their prayers for my family. I have seen that there are many here who know it's value. My humble thanks.

Congratulations to Walt Jocketty and Bob Castellini; and to you guys.I would also like to thank all you guys for making this journey of life a little more fun, since discovering this site. You will rarely see this many egos civilly and intelligently get together and reason. Again thanks

Speaking of Chapman.... and wonder where that leaves him? Does he start out at Louisville?

Daniel Herrara's back on the market if we're looking to level those giants out.
