Giambi to Indians on minor league deal

The Indians have signed Jason Giambi to a minor league deal. He's 42 years old, can't play the field, and WILL make multiple trips to the DL if he makes the team. Why even give this guy a shot to make the roster if you're the Tribe? You're not close to competing, try and develop some young guys. Why give away precious at-bats to a dinosaur? I'll never understand moves like this. I understand it's a minor league deal, but why even give him a chance of making the squad.

This is a weird move. It is a minor league deal, so there's not much risk involved. Maybe they're counting on him DHing a few days a week and providing some leadership.

Player/"Coach" role perhaps?

Now they've signed Daisuke to a minor league deal. At least that has a chance of being fruitful, but I agree, keep developing your young players.

Re: Giambi to Indians on minor league deal

I get the Cleveland Plain Dealer alot since I live in NE Ohio. Todays paper said if Jason were to make the team hes going to get no more than 200-300 AB. Hes washed up IMO at 42 and I think he wants to be more of a player manager than just a player. He does have a career OBP of over .400 though. They also said in todays paper that a successful season for Stubbs would be a .240BA with less than 200 K's. Made me laugh in a way. They also seemed to wonder if his D was as good as everyone has made it out to be. An OF of Brantley, Stubbs, and Swisher should be pretty good if healthy. Alot of speed and athleticism.

Dice-K...Francona must have seen enough in him to think he's fixable, or can provide something positive to the pitching staff. It would be hard for me to get excited as a Indians fan over either of these moves.
