Birthdays: 3/17
Reds:
John Smiley (47) -A '95 All-Star for the Reds. Surrendered Tom Glavine's only major league home run. Hank Sauer -Plodding OF whose early career was mismanaged by the Reds. The team wouldn't overlook his defensive shortcomings; once he left Cincy and got the chance to play regularly he was a fearsome slugger. Others: Bill Mueller (51) -The 2003 AL batting champion. On 6/29/03 he became the only player to hit a grand slam from both sides of the plate in the same game. Danny Ainge (53) -I think he's still the youngest player in Blue Jay history to hit a home run. Beyond that, his baseball career was only a footnote. Clarence Gaston (67) -First African-American manager to win a World Series. His nickname "Cito" came from a Mexican wrestler he supposedly resembled. Pete Reiser -Leo Durocher said he could do everything Willie Mays could except stay healthy. Was carried off the field on a stretcher 11 times in his career, and was once given last rites at the ballpark. Charlie Root -Middletown, Ohio native best known for being the pitcher in the famous babe Ruth "called shot" incident.
