Re: Dayton Dragons 2012 Preview: Third Basemen

I am excited to watch Arias hit the ball. He is one of those guys who can do some real damage when he puts the bat on the ball. He is also of course, one of those guys who has trouble with plate discipline (or has in the past) that may have troubles with consistency because of it. His walk rate last year was ok, but his strikeout rate was 30% (per PA, not per AB). You would like to see him do what so many of the Dragons hitters did last year, and improve as the season went along with their plate discipline.

Why do those two skills seem mutually exclusive? Why can't a player be a selective power hitter? Is it just that they have to start the bat sooner when they muscle up?

They don't have to be. Some guys can be selective power hitters. They are just a rare breed. Some guys just swing harder, selling out for power rather than for bat control.
