The Mystery of Yordanys Perez

Yesterday, Yordanys Perez was promoted to AA. Other then the fact that he played in Cuba and the independent leagues (good post by Guacarock in 2001 draft day 2 thread) before being drafted at the age of 27 last season, there has not been much said about Perez. I did a little research, and here were some stats that I found:

As you can see, he was good in his last three Cuban seasons (batted .358 with 12 HR in '09), but was awful in the independent leagues last year.

Does anyone have more information about this guy? I am curious how a 27 year old Cuban immigrant was draft eligible. Should he be considered indy league filler, or does he have the potential to be something more?

He has actually been in AA ever since the season started. He hasn't played due to injury.

He was eligible for the draft because he established residency in Miami and had never signed a professional contract.

Also, he faced Aroldis Chapman in Cuba and managed to get a hit off him.
