I'm glad Matheny has adopted this same philosophy. I'm shocked that more managers do not use "closers" in situational circumstances more than they do.
You generally don't bring in your closer in a tie game on the road. You need to save him to pitch the final half inning in case your team scores in the top. Even LaRussa followed the rule most of the time.

When this team starts hitting - and IMO it will - watch out! Because the pitching has simply been solid. And pitching wins.

Pitching wins when hitting put a few runs across the plate. This team lacks that very keen skill making the first rule completely null and void.

Dusty has mismanaged the bullpen this season. I only watched 3 1/2 innings but it sounds like he did again last night.

But saying that the offense is the problem. No clutch hitting at all. The same problem as last season and so unfortunately it's probably not going to get any better.

Do you generally bring in your long man in extra innings to pitch to one batter?

DO you normally bring in a guy who you stated at the first of the season wasn't ready for high leverage situations because of injury, into a high leverage situation?

What about Marshall? He looked really rusty the other night because he is not getting used.

Yet he was sharp today after two days off. Go figure.
