Donald Lutz
I thought I read somewhere that the Reds were gonna try and move this kid to LF. But everytime they give and update on reds live they list him at 1st. Just curious, looks like the kid can rake would hate to lose him because hes blocked at 1st.

Re: Donald Lutz
Right now, Bakersfield doesn't really have a first baseman and they have a glut of outfielders. Lutz is still playing out there though at times. Last night he made two errors in the outfield. He has the speed to play out there, but he has a long way to go with the rest of learning the position. When Dominic D'Anna comes back from the DL, I would expect Lutz to move to the outfield full time (or nearly full time).

Re: Donald Lutz
Here are Lutz' totals for 2010, 2011 & thusfar this year.
I like that his power has come on while improving his average and maintaining fairly high Slashes. How concerned should we be in his BB/K numbers going forward? Billings (2010) AB: 203 BB: 21 (10.3%) K: 45 (22.1%) ,286/.356/,478/.834 Dayton (2011) AB: 465 BB: 34 ( 7.3%) K: 125 (26.9%) .301/,358/492/.850 Bakersfield (2012) AB: 112 BB: 9 ( 8.0%) K: 25 (22.3%) .304/.352/.643/.995 |

Re: Donald Lutz
You really should calculate K and BB rates by using PA's and not AB's. Gives a much better picture.
But Lutz is one of those guys who is not good in the plate discipline department, but isn't real bad. It is something that is worth keeping an eye on with him, but nothing something that at this point in time is something to be overly concerned about.

Re: Donald Lutz
Went to the Reds versus futures game. Lutz absolutely killed the ball. Almost took Mike Leake's head off on a come backer up the middle. Also hit a homer to center. Has only played baseball for 5 years iirc.

He was the most impressive guy in batting practice of the minor league guys. He was hitting line drives that off the bat I swear were 'single' type hits and they were going into the seats. It was very impressive. Lutz has only been playing since he was around 14 or 15. He is 23 now, so it is more like 8-9 years. Still incredibly young in terms of playing time for his age though.

Re: Donald Lutz
Hamilton, Lutz, and possibly Vidal need to be moved up in the next month. They have nothing left to prove in high A. And Bakersfield has 3 of the top 3 of the top 7 California League starting pitchers by e.r.a. (Cingrani, Rogers, Lotzkar). Might as well move Cingrani up too.
Move Hamilton and Lutz to OF permanently.

Hamilton, Lutz and Vidal all have something to prove at that level. They need to prove that they can deal with adjustments at that level once they have been around the league.

Re: Donald Lutz
They can do that in double A.

Re: Donald Lutz
They can show they have the ability to make adjustments in High A while in AA?

Reds need to move these guys along. It's not like they're jumping to AAA. Reds triple A team is a joke. They should move some real prospects up from AA to AAA and cut bait on some of those guys.

Re: Donald Lutz
There is absolutely a very large difference. Guys in AA are more advanced, can throw better breaking balls and can throw them inside, outside, high and low. They can also control their fastball better. The biggest jump in the minors is from A+ to AA.

Seen too many guys go from A to AA, and finish a season in AAA and not miss much of a beat, when the triple AAA players went to majors in September callups or before that because of massive injuries to the ml team. Mez is one. Seen others do it. My point is, some guys need to be challenged. Others need to move slower. My opinion is that Hamilton, Lutz, Cingrani, and maybe Vidal need to be challenged more. Now, if they are going to permanently move them to a new position, then maybe high A is the way to go. Duran and Yorman are making it look like moving from A to high A is the most difficult. We'll agree to disagree.
