Joe Girardi post-game on Chapman: "Guy's got a live arm, glad we only had to face him for 1 inning."

I think Dusty handled today perfectly IMO. As he's done multiple times IIRC. When a guy hasn't had it, he's yanked him. He didn't do that as often with Cordero.
Only question I have is how many batters did he need to face before knowing Marshall didn't have it today?

I've also noticed that Chapman throws a lot of pitches as does Marshall. Has to make both weary.

What a cluster....
Chapman makes $2M this season, plus a $1.5m signing bonus,

Regardless, he's only there because Bray is hurt.

And this is with him not pitching very well. Marshall will be fine.

The way I look at it is this...if we move Chapman into the closer role...it's going to be VERY difficult to move him OUT of the closer role. I want to see him start. As I'm sure most Reds fans do. Leaving him out of that role allows him to pitch the 7th & 8th, the 8th & 9th. If he's the "closer", we know how he'll be used...9th only, sometimes only PART of the 9th. He's never been good on going back to back days, and certainly not 3 days in a row. I know he's been virtually unhittable, but there ARE reasons to not put him in that role. Valid ones. And hardly "dumb" ones.
I think those stats are false. Marshall has not converted 7 of 8 save opportunities in the real world sense. He has come in for a save in the ninth a few times and has been bailed out by another pitcher, ala today.

I'm not sure how they could be false. But we're also assuming that had Marshall been left in that he WOULDN'T have gotten out of it himself. And on those occasions when another guy came in to "bail him out" he hasn't gotten a save or the save opportunity, right?

My point is that it doesn't matter what inning a pitcher throws poorly. If he gave up 2 runs in the 7th inning instead, people would be complaining. If Chapman had come in for the 9th and issued 2 walks people would be complaining. The only way to satisfy people is to go 1-2-3 with 3 strikeouts it seems. I don't see too many guys out there with 0.00 era's over the course of a season.

I'm not trying to say he's not struggling. He is. He's leaving his fastballs up in the middle of the plate. But 15 innings is pretty quick to say he's ill-suited for the closer role IMO. Especially when his numbers really aren't bad at all (outside of era).

And don't get me wrong, I like Marshall but that 7 of 8 figure jumped out at me like a sore thumb.

Marshall is a set-up guy, not a closer.

At least they all are until they get a shot at closing.

7 of 8 saves converted.
Highest groundball rate on the staff (with a gold glove defense behind him)
Highest k/bb rate on the staff.
2nd on staff k/9 (3 behind chapman)

And that's him "struggling".

We'd better keep track of our starters, then. Don't let them wander away by themselves at the airport. Maybe even make them wear a tracking device.
