Joe Girardi post-game on Chapman: "Guy's got a live arm, glad we only had to face him for 1 inning."

Re: 5/19/12 - Reds at Yankees
I've also noticed that Chapman throws a lot of pitches as does Marshall. Has to make both weary.

My point is that it doesn't matter what inning a pitcher throws poorly. If he gave up 2 runs in the 7th inning instead, people would be complaining. If Chapman had come in for the 9th and issued 2 walks people would be complaining. The only way to satisfy people is to go 1-2-3 with 3 strikeouts it seems. I don't see too many guys out there with 0.00 era's over the course of a season. I'm not trying to say he's not struggling. He is. He's leaving his fastballs up in the middle of the plate. But 15 innings is pretty quick to say he's ill-suited for the closer role IMO. Especially when his numbers really aren't bad at all (outside of era).

And don't get me wrong, I like Marshall but that 7 of 8 figure jumped out at me like a sore thumb.

Who's the next starter should we lose one?

Marshall is a set-up guy, not a closer.

Arredondo is a set-up guy, not a closer.
Ondrusek is a set-up guy, not a closer. Chapman is a set-up guy, not a closer. Bray is a set-up guy, not a closer. Masset is a set-up guy, not a closer. At least they all are until they get a shot at closing. 7 of 8 saves converted. Highest groundball rate on the staff (with a gold glove defense behind him) Highest k/bb rate on the staff. 2nd on staff k/9 (3 behind chapman) And that's him "struggling".
