Thursday 5/31/2012 Minor League Updates

Louisville, once again, plays host to Syracuse. First pitch is at 7:05 EDT. Manager David Bell will be back after serving a mandatory two-game suspension for his 3rd ejection on the season. Dollar beer will be served for an hour and a half before the game starts as live music plays.

Pedro Villareal will pitch for the Bats. On the season he sports 3.62 ERA split between AA and AAA. He has a 44/8 K/BB ratio. And has allowed only two home runs in 59+ innings pitched.

You know, with Villareal and Joseph, the Reds have 2 guys pretty close to being ready to help the pen. Could be they could package a couple relievers near the deadline to a team needing bullpen help (Yankees, Tigers, Phillies) for a bat and still have a solid bullpen.

Billy Hamilton led off the game with a bunt single and continued on to second on a throwing error. A Bryson Smith single brought him home. Bakersfield leads 1-0 after one. Daniel Renken with a perfect first, including one K.

Slidin' Billy singled and stole second base in the third (56). Devin Lohman was then HBP and the San Jose manager was run. Not sure what that was all about. A fly ball resulted in Lohman getting doubled off of first, but Travis Mattair proceeded to double home Hamilton. Bakersfield has outhit San Jose by a 7-2 margin but lead just 2-1 after 4 1/2.

He was arguing that the ball hit the knob of the bat. Lohman seemed to be checking out his hand/wrist area. Replay was inconclusive to me. The ball did hit the knob of the bat, but it looked like it may have also hit his hand and run down into the knob.

Bakersfield still leads 2-1 in the top of the 8th. Hamilton and Bryson Smith with two hits apiece. Mattair, Bowe, Vasquez and Ewing with safeties. Daniel Renken pitched seven strong innings. He gave up four hits, walked two and struck three, while allowing one unearned run.

Chris Joyce comes on in the bottom of the 8th for Bakersfield and gives up back-to-back rally killers. Bakersfield trails 3-2 heading into the 9th.

The Bakers went back in front with 2 in the top of the ninth, centered around a walk to Bowe, double by Vicioso and single by Lohman. Curiously, Hamilton was intentionally walked with Vicioso on second.

But Jose tied it in the bottom off Kyle McMyne. It's 4-4 in the tenth.

Re: Thursday 5/31/2012 Minor League Updates

Top of 11th with Bakersfield batting. This seems like an odd sequence:

Quote:
Billy Hamilton singles on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Lollis.
Devin Lohman walks. Billy Hamilton to 2nd.
With Bryson Smith batting, Devin Lohman picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Dan Burkhart to first baseman Ricky Oropesa to shortstop Joe Panik to first baseman Ricky Oropesa, Billy Hamilton to 3rd.
Why would Lohman be that far off the bag if second was occupied? Maybe Hamilton faked going to third and Lohman took off on a double steal. I don't know. Hamilton now 3 for 5 with a walk and three runs scored. This may be a dumb question but if Lohman gets picked off and heads to second that counts as a caught stealing. So if Hamilton moves over to third should that not be a stolen base? Lohman not having the best day on the bases. That is his second time being erased as a baserunner. He got doubled off of first on a caught fly ball earlier in the game.

Bakersfield in business in the top of the 12th. Vasquez walks and Ewing is hit by a pitch. Two on, nobody out. Bowe walked to load them up. Vicioso singled home a pair. Hamilton reached on a force and then stole second (57). An intentional walk and a sac fly brought home a third run. Blaze bullpen holds onto the lead and they win 7-4.

South Bend draws first blood at Dayton by scoring a run in the top of the second. Dragons answer with two in their half of the inning. Buckley doubles, Waldrop draws a walk. A Gonzalez sac bunt and a base hit by Junior Arias complete the rally.
Tanner Robles has 3IP 3H 1ER 0BB 1K 0HR.

Re: Thursday 5/31/2012 Minor League Updates

'Cola postponed.
Bats postponed.
Dayton scores 3 in the ninth to win 8-7.
Organization goes undefeated on the day.

Dayton Bottom of the 9th

* Pitcher Change: D. J. Johnson replaces Matt Sample.
* Brandon Dailey doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Tom Belza.
* Juan Perez singles on a line drive to center fielder Ender Inciarte. Brandon Dailey scores.
* With Kurtis Muller batting, wild pitch by D. J. Johnson, Juan Perez to 2nd.
* Kurtis Muller singles on a line drive to center fielder Ender Inciarte. Juan Perez scores. Kurtis Muller to 2nd on the throw.
* Joe Terry singles on a line drive to center fielder Ender Inciarte. Kurtis Muller scores.

Kurtis Muller has been plain stupid since joining the club. Today he was 2-3 with his fourth HR and fourth SB. Now at .475. Buckley had three hits, Arias and Terry two. Robles got racked, but O'Rear and Dennhardt (an unlikely pair, I'd say, although Dennhardt is starting to look sharp) kept it close.

In just 10 games, Muller has taken the Dragons' team lead in home runs with 4.
