Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 2)

My top 10 guys still available that would fit well with the Reds:

1. Hunter Virant LHP HS
2. Alex Wood LHP Georgia
3. Tanner Rahier 3B HS
4. Adam Brett Walker OF? Jacksonville
5. Rio Ruiz 3B HS
6. Jake Barrett RHP Arizona St
7. Carson Kelly 3B HS
8. Chris Beck RHP Georgia Southern
9. Brett Mooneyham LHP Stanford
10. Mitch Brown RHP HS

Hopefully the Reds can get one or two of these guys with the 78th, 109th, 142nd and/or 172nd picks today.

While some might argue against taking another high schooler, it doesn't seem as if any of the guys they've already drafted should be budget-busters. In fact, they may be able to get Travieso or Gelalich to sign for less than slot, freeing up some money to throw at one of the falling high schoolers in the second or third rounds today. I'm specifically thinking about Virant, Rahier or Kelly.

Skye Bolt is another difficult sign who could be interesting if the Reds think they could persuade him to forego college. Not to mention the coolest name in the draft.

Hearing Virant may be unsignable now. I wouldn't mind seeing the Reds take Nolan Fontana either, he has shades of Zack Cozart although he could be the eventual heir to Phillips at 2B.

Trey Williams I think would be an interesting pick. 3B with a big bat and son of a former major leaguer.

He does have great tools, but I've heard he's not much of an actual baseball player. Still though could be interesting after the third round.

Agreed. Him or Renda. I'd like to see them take either guy.

Re: Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 2)

I have a question maybe somebody knows the answer to.

In the NFL, if the entire draft goes by and a guy is not picked he is free to sign as a free agent with any team.

How does that work in baseball? If a guy is not drafted can you get him as an undrafted free agent? And more to the point, if a guy is an undrafted free agent, are they subject to the MLB draft pool?

They're free agents and can sign with any club. Ryan Hanigan was an undrafted free agent.

Welp, there goes that. Fontana the first player selected on Day 2.

Re: Official 2012 Draft Day Thread (Day 2)

Why would they not put this on MLB's channel? It's not like there's a game on or anything of note.

Brandon Beachy was also undrafted.
