Matt Garza?

mlbtraderumors.com listed the Reds as interested in Garza. That makes no sense to me, we need another bat that can play LF.

Re: Matt Garza?

What's his career batting average? He's pretty athletic and I'm willing to bet he played outfield in High School.

Go Reds!!

IF... and this is an enormous IF... the Reds wanted to target a starting pitcher for the rotation for years to come, you would have to open up a spot in the rotation for that to happen. You would have the potential to trade whatever incumbent's spot is being taken, then. (Bailey or Leake)

For the type of bench improvement the Reds might be looking for, a Bailey and especially a Leake would go a long way in securing another bat. (and maybe then some)

All that said, don't see a move like that or Greinke happening because of the cost that would be required to retain them going forward.

Only makes sense if they would then use say Homer or Leake as trade for a bat..

Yep.

I do think it's interesting that this is the second top-tier starting pitcher the Redlegs have been tied to as a potential trade target. Again, I think it'd be tough to pull off... Will just be curious if that continues to be a trend in the rumors.

Re: Matt Garza?

Bailey or Leake, who would you trade for a bat?

All about who you're getting in return. I think Leake has more value at this point, but that could maybe be argued.

Re: Matt Garza?

Sorry, but the Reds should have no interest in Garza. Waste of time and prospects. The Reds don't need to mess around with the rotation. They already have that down which Garza provides little if no upgrade(especially if Bailey's mechanics are the issue and he works it out). The Phillies made the mistake many on this site are making. Stop overvaluing starting pitching when your pen and offense are soft.

They need bats and another power arm in the pen. Bailey has little value to the offseason at least and Leake is to cheap for the Reds to deal. Move your prospects for bats and bats only.

Re: Matt Garza?

If you've got great starting pitching, you've got a chance. You cannot be disappointed with how the Reds have performed thus far this season.

Re: Matt Garza?

I'd bet the Reds were there more for advanced scouting than for trade interest.
