Cole Hamels signs 6 year, 140 million extension with Phillies

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/81...year-140m-deal

The Phils have a whole bunch of money tied up between Hamels, Howard, Utley and Halladay. Second richest contract for a pitcher in history (Sabathia).

Wow - big contract. I wonder if this will make Cliff Lee more available. The Brewers, Cubs, D-Rays, and others are happy... as taking Hamels off the market has to help the trade value of Greinke, Garza, Shields, etc..

Glad to see it. Rather have Hamels off the market in Philly than on the market going to some other team, especially if that wound up being an NL team.

Glad he didn't end up in St. Louis next year.

Yowza. Let's hope Stephenson, Corcino, et al. develop, cuz the Reds ain't gonna keep all (or any?) of this current staff much beyond the current window!

Maybe keeping Chapman in the pen now is a conscious choice to hold down his future contract as a starter?

I remember when there was legitimate concern that Hamels wouldn't survive to arbitration with his arm intact.

Absolutely, with the kind of money being tossed around in FA the Pensacola arms and Stephenson/Travieso are going to be critical in the 2015-2016 timeframe. Going to be tough if not impossible to extend Cueto beyond 2015 barring a massive new TV contract.

Reds may have to make a couple of savvy extensions in the offseason to buy out a couple of FA years from Bailey, Latos and Leake in exchange for guaranteed money through all the arb years. The Cueto signing was absolute genius in keeping him through 2015. Hopefully they'll pick the right 1-2 guys to extend out into 2016-2017. Maybe they can get Latos at a bit of a discount.

Poor roster mgmt will make Leake a FA after the 2015 season instead of 2016. That shouldn't have ever happened.

The good news is the Reds have time, but it is a little scary looking out past 2015 at this point.

What do you believe the Reds did wrong in regards to Leake?
