I'm the best there is at what I do. But what I do isn't very nice
Indeed, Xavier, you are a bad, bad man.
This, to this point, has been another addition to the club that I somewhat scorned, ridiculed and had a queasy feeling over when the Reds made it. Despite his numbers in L'ville, my feeling was Paul had a long track record and it wasn't very good. So far, though, he's far surpassed my expectations. He's delivering quality at-bats, coming up with clutch hits and been a real spark as a left-handed batter off the bench. So here's to you, X. He may still turn out to be who I thought he was, but in the meantime he's making for an enjoyable run.

I remember I was with mth123 in liking the move at the time after I checked out his minor league numbers.
But yeah, he's done even better than I expected.

With Stubbs' numbers against righties, Paul should start in CF, and Stubbs should start against lefties.

At this point, while I'm not sure I'd want to see Paul against every RHP, I think it would be optimal to have him share some of the time with Stubbs. Paul, at least as he's playing right now, would be a nice leadoff option in games he's in the lineup.

Totally small sample, but he has really been used in the right spots if you ask me.

Many successful teams end up with a guy who comes from nowhere to be a solid constributor.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the playoff roster. Were I the Reds, I'd be tempted to keep him over LeCure, Ondrusek, or Simon, as those guys aren't likely to be used, especially with Leake or Arroyo also in the pen. (I'd also add another bat-- someone like Lyle Overbay, Jason Giambi, or their RH counterpart-- at the expense of a middle reliever.) Potent pinch hitters are far more valuable in short series than either glove men or long/ middle men in the pen. No one beyond Bailey, Cueto, Latos, Chapman, Marshall, or Broxton would see a meaningful inning pitched were I manager. Maybe, in extra innings, Leake or Arroyo, Simon or Massett. An eight or nine-man staff with pinch hitters loaded on the 25-man would mean other managers would/ could run out of options with middle relievers and you could own the advantage in pretty much every split. For example, the Reds are playing LA, and it's close. Seventh inning of the first game. Cincinnati pinch hits for Hanigan with late-season Scott Hairston pick-up. Dodgers counter, removing a tiring Kershaw with Ronald Belisario, one of their solid set-up guys. Baker then re-counters by pulling Hairston for Paul, giving the Reds a 200+ OPS advantage.

Re: I'm the best there is at what I do. But what I do isn't very nice
Nice thread. I've become a Xavier Paul fan in his short time with the Reds. 27 seems to be the magical age for many MLB'ers and guess how old Mr. Paul is? That's right, 27. Not a bad left-handed bat off the bench at all. Isn't that exactly what we wanted? He's coming through. It's a bottom line business and he's coming through.

It's not hard to find guys to come off the bench and get hits. They're everywhere. I'm not trying to take anything away from X because he's been great, I'm just saying there's no reason it took so long to find somebody like him.

Re: I'm the best there is at what I do. But what I do isn't very nice
The average OPS off the bench this year is .665. I'm not sure it's really all that easy to find.

Paul reminds me of Jerry Hairston Jr. Great guy off the bench, great attitude and very professional, just don't start him too much.
