Dusty handled this correctly.

If Phillips hits for Valdez, then Simon hits ninth and leads off next inning.

You don't want that result.

This way, Phillips leads off next inning and Simon can stay in the game for the long haul.

Of course, the Reds could lose right here and it wouldn't matter.
