Johnny Cueto: Mind Reader, Cy Young Candidate, #1 in Reds Fans Hearts

Quote:
"He's good, man. You've got to give him credit," said D-backs catcher Miguel Montero. "He pretty much never gives in and he's a tough guy to face because when you go out there looking for something it's like he's reading your mind. It's like he never throws you what you're looking for and it kind of screws you up a little bit."
Wow, I love reading this from opponent's all star catcher. It sinks in deeper.

Quote:
"All I can promise right now is I'm going to keep going because I want to win at least 20 games," Cueto said through an interpreter.
And who can say he won't get there? This guy is fierce. He's a self made man, too. Johnny Cueto is this good because he made himself this good. Nobody ordained him or self appointed him. Congrats to him!

Kinda funny because I remember him getting lumped into the same group as Volquez due to his long hair and some of his body language early on in his career. Glad to see Johnny's hard work paying off. Also glad to see it because I have always had a soft spot for him after his ML Debut.

Johnny Cueto was a project a few years ago. Some people thought he'd always be a 5-6 inning pitcher and his emotions might get the best of him. This is amazing to see him mature into the Cy Young leader heading down the stretch!

And Cueto listens.

Dusty mentioned to him that when he was with the Dodgers, alot of the good pitchers did running including running the stair steps. Supposedly this is a huge part of Cueto's workout regime'.

Cueto threw his 1st wild pitch of the year last night.

Baserunners have 1 stolen base against him....in 9 attempts.

It's jarring to see photos of him from two or three years ago. He must have lost 25 pounds in that time, and for a vertically challenged fella, that's no small feat.

It's probably going to come down Cueto vs Kershaw in the NL. It's literally neck and neck right now, but as long as Cueto maintains a similar performance level the rest of the way, I think he'll get it because he has more wins and fewer losses than Kershaw.

One thing that concerns me though is Cueto fatiguing late. His next start will put him at a career high for innings. I think he can handle that just fine, but I think he may be pretty tired by the end of September and we need him to be at his best after.

One other little morsel....he leads the majors with a 6.0 WAR.

If you had told me 3 years ago Cueto would be doing this....his first name would not be Johnny.

Here's a piece that C. Trent tweeted about Cueto's pick off move and how that alone moves him up in the statistical categories and may given him the front place for Cy Young.

I love the Posey clip. That's some nice glove work by Votto on both clips.

I was wondering...

Has anyone ever won a Cy Young candidate that did not even make the All-Star team in the same season? I should really look that up but I'm too lazy.

I'm not surprised that it's been done before, but I'm admittedly surprised at the frequency.

I thought about it earlier and went to Baseball-Reference.com but it seemed very tedious to go through it bit by bit. Hence tonight thinking that Google might well have the answer.
