I know that's said somewhat in jest, but it's actually very real. The average pitcher is such a poor hitter (and the Reds bench isn't exactly stellar) that Leake put up 1.3 WAR as a hitter this year -- 2.8 WAR over 195 PA for his career. The production he gives you at the plate goes a long way in offsetting the disadvantage he gives you on the mound relative to somebody who's just marginally more effective, like Arroyo.

I hope he lasts long enough to get in an AB.

You know with all of our fretting over Leake he is going to go out and pitch a gem.

Re: Who Pitches Game 4?

I think it is pretty fortunate that we at least get a matchup of our #5 vs. their #4. It comes down to the bats coming alive tonight moreso than who takes the ball first.

Just for the sake of argument, what if instead of dropping Cueto, they drop Simon?

Bat Leake 2nd? I'm only half-kidding... His OPS is almost Valdez + Cairo combined.

Re: Who Pitches Game 4?

The Reds must know Cueto would be unlikely to pitch until at least the back end of the NLCS in the best case, so probably an easier decision then we all think.

Latos, Arroyo and Bailey can fill games 1,2,3 and 5,6,7 in the NLCS regardless if there is a Game 5 (where Latos would become the Game 3 NLCS starter).

Let's pray for good Leake tonight...

Simon and Arredondo aren't injured, Cueto is. Wouldn't that be pretty obvious?

Easy, that's where Jeff Gillooly comes in handy.

Re: Who Pitches Game 4?

Leake is pretty bad at GABP, pretty bad during the day, pretty bad during the first 50 pitches thrown... I just don't know other than to say he's a fighter and can come up big when you least expect it. He's had time off to rest and should have some velocity, not that it matters too much to his game. I slate him for 4 runs today and tell Votto to find that power stroke!

Votto being reduced to a singles hitter/walk machine is a major bummer and very disheartening.

Re: Who Pitches Game 4?

6-5 win today. Leake goes 5.

A least that type of game is quite possible if the offense shows up.

Re: Who Pitches Game 4?

Then say they lose today and play tomorrow. If Latos gets into trouble, could Cueto do what Pedro did? Martinez was supposed to start a particular do or die playoff game and couldn't due to some issue. He instead came on in relief in the middle of a game and totally shut down the other team.
