Birthdays- 10/12

Reds:

Paul Janish (29)

Others:

Sid Fernandez (49) -It'd be interesting to see what El Sid looks like now that he's been out of the game a while and not in tip-top shape...

Glenn Beckert (71) -Great hit-and-run man; one of the few Cubs I liked. I believe he went into the Board of Trade after his playing career.

Tony Kubek (76) -Color man on Game of the Week during my youth.

Joe Cronin -Most similar player, according to Baseballreference: Barry Larkin.

Rick Ferrell -Maybe the worst cather in the Hall of Fame. Him or Ray Schalk.

Can't believe Kubek is that old. He always had a very youthful appearance. IIRC, I read a while back that he totally disassociated himself from baseball after the 1994 strike.

Yea, he could care less about the game.

Yeah, I enjoyed Kubek on NBC...but he always called Tony Perez 'Tony Paris'...trying to be oh so proper and perfect, I guess.

Re: Birthdays- 10/12

I was different in my opinion about Tony Kubek as an announcer back in the day. Drove me nuts! Never shut his darn mouth and always had an opinion on everything (sorry, Marty!) in which I hardly ever agreed. I used to call him the Billy Packer of baseball.

Los of us have heard about Bill Mazeroski, but a bad hop in the 8th inning helped Pittsburgh in the 1960 WS game 7. A terrible hop hit Kubek in the throat at SS for the Yanks. Hit him so hard that he had to leave the game b/c he had trouble breathing.
