Birthdays: 1/19
Reds:
Chris Stynes (39) -Had two really good years with the Reds- 1997 and 2000- that were definitely the highlight of his career. Rick Krivda (42) -0-2, 11.28 with the Reds. On the other hand, he won an Olympic gold medal in 2000, so what the heck... Chris Sabo (50) -Spuds reaches the half-century mark. Chris played one game of minor league hockey (he was a goalie) before deciding to focus on baseball. Rich Gale (58) -Big righty who was 4-6, 5.82 for the 1983 Reds. Served as pitching coach iin Nashville until resigning in the middle of the 2011 season. Others: Anthony Young (46) -Remembered for his 27 consecutive losing decisions. It should be noted that during that streak he had 13 quality starts, converted 12 consecutive save opportunities, and had a 23 2/3 inning scoreless streak. Jon Matlack (62) -Full name Jonathan Trumpbour Matlack. Surrendered Roberto Clemente's 3000th and final hit. On May 8 1973, a line drive off the bat of Marty Perez caromed off Matlack's forehead so hard that it rolled completely into the dugout. Ouch... Chick Gandil -The ringleader of the "eight men out". Worked as a plumber in northern California after being banned from baseball. He always claimed that he ended up never seeing a penny of any payoff money.

Re: Birthdays: 1/19
A nice tribute over at Better Off Red for Sabo. A nice slideshow of pics. Quite a few I've never seen.

Re: Birthdays: 1/19
Being a 1-19er myself, Spuds was a favorite player of mine growing up.

Chris Stynes. The poster child for why too much playing time given to an effective role player can be a bad thing. I think of him every time I think of Chris Heisey.

My recollection is that a while later when someone asked why the nickname Sabo answered, "I'm not sure but they tell me I look like the guy."
