2. Chris Heisey (R) LF
3. Joey Votto (L) 1B
4. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B
5. Jay Bruce (L) RF

7. Zack Cozart (R) SS
8. Ryan Hanigan (R) C
9. Homer Bailey (R) P

If Heisey's 2012 can be looked at as a sort of sophomore slump, we could be really happy with him hitting 2nd. He is POUNDING the ball. I'd like to see who's stronger, him or Mez.

The Pez version of Devin Mesoraco?

Mes is our millenia-old backup catcher ("Mes" for the Mesozoic Era in which he entered the majors as a promising prospect). He is petrified to the bench.

Don't quite understand why Mes isn't starting tonight. Even under Dusty's rotation, I thought it was his turn.

Hope no injury. If anyone hears, please post.

I was wildly impressed w/ Hanigan this series (other than the phantom tag). He is at an elite level as a receiver in this league, hopefully Mes is paying attention.

Trajinous
04-05-2013, 05:11 PM
My theory on why Hanigan is in:
Angels and Nats are playoff-caliber teams. Dusty is making his line-up more experienced filled and more like a Reds-playoff lineup. Plus out of 3 games, the Reds starters have pitched 3 quality games. Why switch it up against the pre-season NL favorite?

I do find it strange he didn't pinch-hit during the Angels series.

I would imagine Mesoraco gets his first start in the early afternoon game tomorrow.

RollyInRaleigh
04-05-2013, 05:37 PM
I feel bad for Mesoraco. If this is how he's going to be used, he'd be better off playing every day in Louisville.

04-05-2013, 05:42 PM
Well, it's pretty obvious Mesoraco is really going to have to earn his playing time this season through his performance.

RollyInRaleigh

Hard to earn it when you get the kind of intermittent playing time that Mesoraco gets.

Interesting graphic on first-pitch strikes for Bailey. His improvement-- from half to two-thirds in four years-- is a testament to both how hard it is to pitch in the major leagues and Bailey's improvement as a pitcher.

A lot of nibbling right now from Homer tonight. 61 pitches through 3.1 innings won't keep you in the game long.

You start flip flopping the batting order based on who you think is "hot" on a nightly basis (when randomness often explains small sample size slumps and hot streaks), and you will have one unhappy team.

There is probalby a reason why successful managers manage for a 162 season, and not for 1 game.

My orginal post was more a prediction of RZ behavior more than anything. I do care what Hanigan brings to the table offensively. If you point to his catcher ERA I simply ask what you think the catcher ERA would be if Mesoraco were catching. Hanigan caught some very good pitchers, and they are way more responsible for the ERA than the catcher.

I'm just not one who says "he's awesome behind the plate, everything else is a bonus".

That said, many people will be harping on Hanigan before I call for a major shakeup. But I can see the train coming.

Forget the home run, the Shin-Soo Choo acquisition was worth it just to hear Jeff Brantley say his name.

Would have paid a fee to hear ol' Nuxie try it after "a few" in the 7th or 8th inning. :D

You start flip flopping the batting order based on who you think is "hot" on a nightly basis (when randomness often explains small sample size slumps and hot streaks), and you will have one unhappy team.

There is probalby a reason why successful managers manage for a 162 season, and not for 1 game.

Nothing radical... just manage daily. Let him work out his horrible batting approach right now at the 8th hole in front of the pitcher. Keep him away from the current mix that is hitting and scoring runs. Its not a huge deal to just move a guy whose been awful for 4 days to hit 8 hole. Let frazier bat 5 right now.

I agree completely.

My point is that he's not even close to hurting the offense. It's too bad that a guy that can't hit 20 HRs is automatically viewed as a liability by some people.

That said, I get the impression that Hanigan is well liked here and is unlikely to join the likes of Cory Patterson and Willy Taveras as RZ whipping boys.

I"m not sure what you definition of "radical" is, but moving a "Bruce type" hitter from 5 to 8 in the bating order after 4 bad games is my very definition of "radical".

What I would consider "not radical" is flip flopping Bruce and Frazier if a lefty was starting.

If a manager managed like that, moving Bruce to 8th after 4 bad games, every player would leave when they hit FA.

There is a reason why zero managers manage like that.

I don't think you manage a line up based on a "type" of hitter someone is. You manage a line up based upon "what" are you doing...what is your tendency right now. Agree to disagree.

But you are basing it on what is player is doing over 3 games, Cozart was 0-11 coming into this game, and has 2 HR's and 5 RBI's.

You base anything in baseball on 3 games and you are going to be disappointed. And you'd change the line up daily and likely be always catching up to a hot streak.

I don't care if Votto looks on or not, or whether or not he's gone hitless for 3 games. He's still likely to be our best hitter in that next AB.
