Sac fly by Votto. There's your "production" folks. Just remember, 4 pitches...only 1 he even had a chance to do anything with. Most hitters have multiple opportunities in each AB...Joey gets 1 each ab...MAYBE.

There's no excuse for the Reds not to sweep this series. The Marlins have one major league hitter.

Well then the Marlins and Astros should both go 0-162. But baseball doesn't work like that. Taking three out of four will hardly be a failure here. Winning series is what matters. Saying there's "no excuse" for not sweeping someone is silly.

Question for the room:
Reds are on the road for an interleague game, so they're playing with the DH. Mike Leake is pitching and Hanigan is catching. Could they use Mesoraco as the DH for Hanigan and let Leake bat?

Basically, is the DH strictly for the pitcher or can another player be used replaced in the batting order instead?

IIRC that's not entirely true. I think there's some strange situation that allows the pitcher to move to a fielding position or something weird like that.

Found it. Not exactly what I was thinking, but an odd twist....

Pinch hitters for a Designated Hitter may be used. Any substitute hitter for a Designated Hitter himself becomes a Designated Hitter. A replaced Designated Hitter shall not re-enter the game in any capacity. The Designated Hitter may be used defensively, continuing to bat in the same position in the batting order, but the pitcher must then bat in the place of the substituted defensive player, unless more than one substitution is made, and the manager then must designate their spots in the batting order.

Marlins made a smart move bringing in the lefty reliever to face Paul and Choo. Reds could have switched off to Robinson for Paul, but in potential extra innings game, you don't usually "burn" bench players.

Next inning, they could leave the lefty in because of Votto, which gives Cozart the percentages in his favor.

I'd take issue with this. Hanigan's numbers have steadily declined in recent seasons. He had a .703 OPS last year.

When you look at his splits, he really doesn't hit righty pitching much at all. He had a .685 OPS in 2011, .661 in 2012, against righty pitching.

I think the argument that defense is the main job of a catcher (with offense not being that important) doesn't hold up.

The best players at every position both hit and field their position. I don't think catcher is any different.

Sure, a catcher has to play good defense but if he can't hit right handed pitching it seriously hurts his value.

Well, I haven't looked at his splits. But I don't see steady decline. I see his OBP being a career high of .405 in 2010 then the next 2 season right at his career norms. His dingers went down last season, but he had twice as many doubles. And each year he's still having more BB's than K's. He'll be fine. He's in a slump, much like Joey is.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not down on Mes either. His time may very well be now...but the ragging on Hanny is excessive (that's all my point was).
