Garcia has pitched his best in St. Louis this season, holding teams to just three earned runs in 13 2/3 innings. He also has a career 2.45 ERA when pitching at home.

Although Arroyo has produced quality starts in three of his five outings, he was lit up early by Washington, giving up six runs in the first three innings. He was able to battle through six innings, but the Reds took an 8-1 loss, and he fell to 2-2 on the season, with a 4.24 ERA.

Against the Cardinals on April 9, Arroyo allowed four runs on five hits in six innings, taking the loss to continue his woes at Busch Stadium. In 15 career games in St. Louis, he is 3-7 with a 5.46 ERA.

• Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran was held out of the lineup on Monday, as he was weak following an extended bout with a stomach illness. He pinch-hit in the eighth inning and flied out to left field.

Aren't the Reds responsible for the three earned runs Garcia has given up at home this year? I think so. Hopefully we can get to him early, at least enough to up his pitch count so we can get into their bullpen by the 7th.

Sorry if I missed this posted elsewhere, but this gave me a good chuckle. From John Fay:

Who’s the closer tonight?
04/30/13 at 6:08pm by John Fay

ST. LOUIS — If the Reds have a save opportunity tonight, it’s unclear who will get it. It probably won’t Aroldis Chapman or Jonathan Broxton.

“We’re dealing with a rash of allergies,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “We’ve got allergy problems going through our team. We’ve got 10 or 12 guys with bad allergies, including Chapman. He looked like hell when he came in.

“I don’t think he’s available tonight. I don’t know if Broxton’s available tonight. We might have to close with somebody else.”

Both Chapman and Broxton have pitched two straight days. Broxton threw 30 pitches in his outing Sunday.

“We were a little apprehensive about using him last night,” Baker said. “It’s not the innings sometimes. It’s the workload of that inning.”

Question: How is that not an error on Cozart? If he doesn't drop that simple toss, Molina is a dead duck.

_Sir_Charles_

I know he pulled off the throw...but that can't be a safe way to do that. He never stepped towards his target or anything. I would think it would be VERY easy to throw that WAAAAAY off line. But...it was a perfect throw, so what the hell do I know. :O)

Can't be an error on a double play attempt.

This does not seem to be true according to this.

10.12 Errors
An error is a statistic charged against a fielder whose action has assisted the team on offense, as set forth in this Rule 10.12.
(a) The official scorer shall charge an error against any fielder:
(1) whose misplay (fumble, muff or wild throw) prolongs the time at bat of a batter, prolongs the presence on the bases of a runner or permits a runner to advance one or more bases.

I haven't seen anywhere close to enough of this kid to know what he can do with the bat OR glove. He's got speed and he can bunt. That's about all I know about him. He's got to be able to do more than that before I pick him over Paul or Heisey.

~edit~ I just looked over his MilB numbers....Looks like he's a zero power, poor average hitter, but skilled in drawing walks, average K's and with excellent SB skills. Useful to be sure, but starter....not sold (even a temp starter).

Interesting. I was always told that you can't have an error on a double play because the double play can never be considered a routine play (or something along those lines).

Interesting. I was always told that you can't have an error on a double play because the double play can never be considered a routine play (or something along those lines).

This also seems to imply an error should have been charged.

Rule 10.12(d) Comment: When a fielder muffs a thrown ball that, if held, would have completed a double play or triple play, the official scorer shall charge an error to the fielder who drops the ball and credit an assist to the fielder who made the throw.

I think everyone agrees that if Cozart holds on to the ball, Molina is out. No big deal. Nothing came of it. I was just curious.

Right in the middle of her forehead.

But when she was bad she was horrid.

Every time we play in St. Louis I feel like the umps are homers. Dude missed the call on BP at second. BP was clearly safe.

To me, it's just another game where the Reds fail with RISP early. Then they completely sleep walk through the last few innings.

Garcia may be good at home, but it doesn't mean Mes has to hit into a DP with first and third; and it doesn't mean Cozart has to hit little grounders twice with RISP.
