Any word on Hanigan? Seeing Corky in the lineup twice a week is making me grouchy.

I know many here want to see Mes as much as possible, but I find it hard to pick on Dusty too much for wanting to not overwork his catchers. 3 out of every 5 is fine with me. If Mes were tearing the cover off the ball, I'd be more up in arms, but he's not...and Corky is better behind the dish than Mes IMO.

Awful, awful pitch selection cost the Reds two runs there. You have Rizzo 1-2, and he's obviously not seeing the fastball well, why even fool around and throw him the breaking ball? Stupid. Another fastball there and this inning would have been over.

Actually, throwing the breaking ball that inning is what cost Cingrani two runs. He mowed the first two hitters down with ease, and had Rizzo down 1-2 with two well located fastballs, then someone decided to get cute and throw a breaking ball, and it eventually cost him two runs. Stick with the fastball there and Cingrani escapes with no damage, IMO.

He threw 4 sliders that inning. Out of 24 pitches. The HR came on a fastball. He had a slider get away from him and plunked Rizzo. I think it's a reach to say he's behind 2-0 due to the slider and pitch selection. He didn't locate the fastball well that inning either. Who's to say that Rizzo wouldn't have gotten a hit on a fastball there?

I must have been watching a different inning. He threw some great fastballs to Ranson, one of which was missed by the ump. The two fastballs to Rizzo were perfectly located.

They ended up in great locations. But there were several where Corky sets up outside and it's a strike on the inside edge, things like that. Great pitches in regards to the hitter...but not where they were meant to be. His location has gotten worse after the HBP.

But I'm not worried...I really think it's just nerves. He settled down there nicely that inning after the 2nd HBP.

He still threw a couple more in the dirt, got a line out that anywhere but at someone would be a double, and went 3-0 to the Cubs worst hitter. I am not sure he really settled down that much that inning.

Simply put, he's GOT to mix in his other pitches more. They're sitting fastball. The pitches to Soriano that ab were both changeups...I don't recall seeing him throw that pitch before. Goalposts shifted.

They are not playing well.

But they are a good team.

If this score holds, the Reds will be 16-15. They've lost a lot of games they should have won. I guess we'll have to disagree then, because in my book the Reds aren't very good right now. I think they'll get better, or at least I hope so. My biggest fear is the injuries continue piling up and this turns into another 2011.

Welcome to Wrigley, rook.
Don't throw Soriano anything in the strike zone, let alone a meatball, at home. That's the only reason the Cubs signed him, to hit meatballs over the ivy.

To me, a team is defined by the group of players that have been assembled. Now a good team can play bad and vice versa. Right now they are plodding along, with a winning record in spite of a relatively large amount of injuries. I don't see how they qualify as "not very good".

I'm not looking to parse words, but just saying, I'm underwhelmed to this point, but I'm not that worried about the rest of the year.

Regarding that breaking ball, why didn't the Reds force Cingrani to almost exclusively throw that pitch down in the minors? It's nasty, but very inconsistent, and it's difficult to develop consistency if it's rarely thrown. He's proven that his fastball is a strength, so what was the point of throwing his fastball 80% of the time in AAA. I would think he should have been throwing breaking ball and changeup 80% and just mixing in a few fastballs.
