Maybe they send a text to everyone on the roster that says "Hey guys, come to the stadium for a big, important meeting" and whoever happens to fall for it gets put into the lineup

Mike Redmond: What time can you get here?

First 9 fans in attendance get to play. It might take two nights to find enough fan-players to fill the bench though.

They could also institute a game of 'left field ball' where anything hit to the right of second is an out....

The Marlins are only 3 wins behind the Angels. Go figure.
Angels are 10 games behind Texas.

I'm not worried about this one game, I assume his arm is fine with it. But now next game he will be on a limited pitch count (I would think). I'd rather keep my options open for his next start, when today's game was pretty much in the bag.

While I would hope Dusty has learned that you don't let Homer do this 4 or 5 times in a row, I think there's something to be said for helping Homer get the confidence that he can reach back for it on #125 should the situation arrive in October. And what better time to do that than when a gopherball makes no difference?

I was about to say, if pitching a complete game (or reaching a pitch count of x) is something Homer needed to get over the proverbial hump mentally or help his psych in some way, I can waver a bit on the move. I'm with you on your thought above.

See, I don't look at it quite that way. Where they would back off is his off day throwing session. That'll be the light day. I agree that they probably shouldn't push him next time out, but here's the thing...pushing Homer is probably around the 125-130 mark. 100 is kinda babying him IMO. 100 is a good spot for a Mike Leake or a Bronson Arroyo. Smaller build, more stress on the arm with all the breaking balls. Same for Cueto, he's a stronger guys, but the extra torque he puts on his body just with the Tiant-twist alone would make me lean towards 100'ish for Johnny. Latos and Homer...their normal work-load SHOULD be higher than those other guys. Especially Homer with his delivery and effort.

125 stress-free pitches against a piss-poor Marlins team isn't anything to get upset about. It's ok to let a guy stretch it out a bit and get a complete game. Geesh the coddling and babying of pitchers goes a little tooooooo far sometimes.

Especially Homer with his delivery end effort.

It's a matter of preference. And face it, tonight was fun to watch!

But again, I'd rather keep my option of him "pushing it" open for his next start. What if it is one of those days where the bullpen has been taxed and they need help from the starter. There's a 90 percent chance everything will work out just fine here, so I acknowledge it's not the end of the world.

3rd highest pitch count in the Majors this year going for a non-shutout complete game up 4 against the Marlins? Not my cup of tea.

117 was the most Homer threw last year. Threw 115 in the no-no.

I haven't seen Homer hit that kind of number on the gun since his rookie season.

Also, he threw unquestionably his best breaking ball in the 9th as well.

Speaking of no-no's, I've got a hunch Homer has another one left in him. Won't necessarily be with the Reds.

Bite your tongue. Extending Homer and Latos should be priority #1 for Walt IMO.

Only 2-3 'pressure' at bats. Homer did a great job staying out of trouble.
