All veteran umpires should know when the tag's up around the elbow, the hand's likely in there. That seemed to be what Dusty was relaying to him between innings.

I just don't understand these pitchers. Latos has the guy 0-2 puts it over the plate and the hitter lines a triple.

Make the guy swing at a ball.

I see this constantly, pitchers making 0-2 pitches too good. That time, ninth inning, one run game, shouldn't have happened.

Latos was too "efficient" he should have thrown a ball.

Going to continue my rant.

These pitchers are afraid to throw a ball. Afraid of walks. I hate this.

Chapman fell behind 2-0 and just threw it right down the middle.

Reds got hurt that inning on two pitches over the plate unnecessarily.

Guy was on third, two outs, a walk means absolutely nothing.

Reds pitchers, including Chapman, just made it too good for the hitters.

Tony Cloninger
05-16-2013, 09:35 PM
So you cannot pitch Chapman more than 2 days in a row because he gets tired...and loses miles off his fastball...you cannot let him sit too long because of the same reason. When is it OK to pitch this guy? He has more than a fastball too.

Feel bad for Mat. Gotta score more than two off any major league team even if they're pitiful.

IMO tonight is not a "feel bad for Mat" night. He was facing the Marlins' hot rookie pitcher. Tough matchup.

Mat grooved an 0-2 pitch for a triple and then lost his lead.

He pitched a very good game, but the ninth inning damage was his fault, at least in substantial part.

So you cannot pitch Chapman more than 2 days in a row because he gets tired...and loses miles off his fastball...you cannot let him sit too long because of the same reason. When is it OK to pitch this guy? He has more than a fastball too.

If the Reds hold on, IMO, the player of the game is Lutz.

I know it sounds odd, but with Choo/Votto about to come up, that base hit by Lutz is huge. It puts enormous pressure on the pitcher.

After the hit, a walk, a bunt, an IBB, a fly ball. Bingo, a run.

Good work Lutz.

I question Hanigan's pitch calling the last two innings esp. with Hoover. Hoover has a good breaking pitch but Hanigan had Hoover throw almost exclusively fastballs and eventually they caught up to it. I think with Nick Green they had him down 0-2 and didn't call for a single breaking pitch. The AB went 11 or 12 pitches and he eventually walked.

I don't want to eradicate anything. But is there any other event, that a player can do in the field, that ends up poorly affecting his team, that winds up giving him a positive stat on his baseball card? It is a joke Chapman got the win, but it is what it is.

There's a stat for everything these days.

Yeah, but the W has been a "triple crown" stat for a hundred years. The oft used "these days" remark above doesn't really apply.

Rule change: If in the last (or any?) inning a pitcher blows a save, but the offense rescues him and retakes the lead in the next half inning, the win goes to the player who was in line for the win before the BS. Or let the scorer make the call, as when a starter goes less than 5?

Would that be a good thing? Or the start of a slippery slope?
