Lutz is playing instead of XPaul. That means Dusty thinks Kendrick isn't a hard fastball pitcher.

Dusty plays XPaul against hard throwing righty fastball pitchers.

He plays Lutz against other righty pitchers. I guess pitchers who don't throw a lot of hard fastballs.

He plays Derrick Robinson against lefties.

Heisey is on the DL or who knows when he would be playing.

Ludwick's slide into third sure caused some complexities in left field.

I'm not as big a Dusty detractor as many, but on the topic of Cozart in the 2 hole, I'm not willing to give any ground. If he's willing to stubbornly leave an automatic (and often unproductive) out between two of the best OBP guys in the league, he deserves to be called out on it.

Yes, Cozart should be dropped in the order. But as good as BP has been, he's gotta get the runner in from 3rd with one out. Granted, had Cozart moved him over he would have scored on Votto's hit, but the Reds need to up their hitting with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs.

Cozart hits a lot of pop ups. Actually mostly he hits ground balls.

So I looked at the highest infield fly percentage in MLB. Infield fly percentage is expressed as a percentage of total fly balls hit by the batter.

Cozart is number 25 among qualified hitters. 25th highest infield fly percentage in MLB, ninth highest in the NL.

Top two guys? BJ Upton with a 31.3% infield fly percentage this year. Josh Willingham with a 30.6% infield fly percentage. Willingham with over 47% fly ball percentage, really high so far. Cozart 14.8% infield fly percentage, highest on Reds.

Cozart has only a 4.1% walk rate and a 12.3% line drive rate. The line drive rate is actually up a bit, it was below 10% earlier on.

I think he'll hit better as the season goes on.

Red Raindog

It's a .526 win-loss percentage. Not impressed?

not arguing the % -- just think that the losses should be noted -- he's @ 18th in all time losses and @18th in all time wins -- not exactly as outstanding as simply saying hey - he's 18th in wins or hey -- he's got 1600+ wins

My guess is he'll get in the Hall with those wins but I'm not sure I'd vote for it

=== added --- he did pile up a bunch of those wins with the steroid boys in SF

I can't figure out how Lutz struggled at AA -- he simply looks like a hitter

Sometimes guys with ability need to be challenged to play their best. They're not robots, and development is not necessarily a linear progression with stops at each level of the minor leagues.

Might want to give Simon the ninth inning to give him some work. If they need him again tomorrow, he can handle it.

Major league pitching can be a difference. More strikes thrown, so maybe less bad balls swung at.

Nice job by Simon to get Michael Young to ground out to Hannahan on the first pitch. Great start by Arroyo: 7.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 102 pitches/69 strikes.

8-0 Reds after eight innings.

Hannahan robbed of a single on a nice play by Utley. Choo singles to LF, he's been on base three more times today. Amazing.

I loved the look on his face in the dugout taking off his gloves. Very ho-hum and seemed to still be processing the at bat. Dude is a pure hitter.

Just got home from the game! Seemed like the Reds were at bat the whole time, and really could have been 16-0 or more. I missed both homers, was taking my daughter down out of the rain for Hanny's shot, and we were hitting the final potty break before heading back home when Votto hit his.

I thought Cincy was pretty boring around the park back before the Banks came to be, but man there is nothing around the Philly arena district. I think I saw one restaurant and a sea of pavement. The park itself is not too bad, and everyone was surprisingly nice to us. I guess a 4 month old helps keep the stupidity down, and a 10-0 beating in the favor of the good guys will shut up even the most obnoxious homer. All in all it's been a good, but really long, day.

Reds are hitting .260 with risp -- 13th in all of baseball

sadly --

they are hitting .214 with risp and 2outs --- 23rd in baseball

===

I need to correct the numbers I posted ---

I failed to notice that the site I was using had the 2011 numbers as the default.

here are the 2013 numbers:

risp = .278 (10th)

risp 2 outs = .193 (27th)

I assume those are the team's ops in those situation. That's really bad. Wonder how they are scoring so many runs.

as you well know (not to get too Rumsfeldian - and I know you know ;-) )

having many base runners will help that.

but there is truth that the Reds have hit poorly with 2 outs & risp this year to date
