This lineup should generate some discussion. I do like Mez DHing. I never thought Dusty would do that. But the old rule still applies,SS always bat 2nd even if they are batting .150.

Reds

1. Shin-Soo Choo (L) CF
2. Cesar Izturis (S) SS
3. Joey Votto (L) 1B
4. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B
5. Jay Bruce (L) RF
6. Todd Frazier (R) 3B
7. Devin Mesoraco (R) DH
8. Derrick Robinson (S) LF
9. Ryan Hanigan (R) C

Indians

1. Michael Bourn (L) CF
2. Jason Kipnis (L) 2B
3. Asdrubal Cabrera (S) SS
4. Nick Swisher (S) 1B
5. Carlos Santana (S) DH
6. Mark Reynolds (R) 3B
7. Michael Brantley (L) LF
8. Yan Gomes (R) C
9. Ryan Raburn (R) RF

Odd to see Cozart out when he is hitting well of late, especially with a left hander starting. Hopefully he is feeling okay/ not injured.

The pitching match-up is Homer Bailey versus Scott Kazmir. Advantage Reds. (Huge) Time to send Lutz back down for regular work.

Makes no sense to sit Cozart vs a lefty, unless he's sick or injured. Makes even less sense to bat Izturis second. It's incredible how much money Dusty Baker gets paid to manage a major league baseball team.

I was wondering if he'd DH Mesoraco. Very glad to see it happen. IMO, they need to make more of an effort to get the kid's bat untracked.

I know.

Robinson's a SH so if he hit second there still wouldn't be three LHH in a row, which admittedly would stop the Earth's rotation.

Plus, Robinson there would mean SPEED at the top of the lineup, which we know Baker loves. But no. SS bats second.

So your head is exploding because he's not batting Derrick Robinson second? Seems like splitting hairs to me. Believe me, I am just as frustrated, but not because D-Rob is batting in the wrong spot.

You won't catch me defending Dusty for this lineup tonight, but I would really love to see the game thread absent of complaints about this move (since literally everyone disagrees with it) so the thread doesn't devolve into the exact same argument about Dusty's value/lack thereof as manager that we have many times a week.

BTW, did I see correctly in the top of the inning that Kazmir hit 94 on the gun? I thought he wasn't garnering interest because he was hovering between 85-89. If he can throw in the low 90's, why weren't there more teams courting him this offseason?

My guess, same reason Hannahan played yesterday. With the DH, it's an opportunity to get some guys some extra playing time that they don't normally get. Izturis hasn't gotten much playing time and just like Jack, he needs some reps.

Two quick Dusty-related things:

1. I don't care that he got a hit, batting Izturis second is Dusty Being Dusty. Textbook. Why wouldn't you want the worst hitter on your team batting in the 2 hole? (Nightmares of the Paul Janish days.)

2. Where are all the people who said last night that you can't (or shouldn't) use your backup catcher as the DH? Obviously, Dusty quickly learned that Mesoraco was his best option as the DH. I don't know how this wasn't crystal clear from the get. Hannahan over Mesoraco as a hitter? OK. I know it was "just one game" but bottom line is it wasn't an intelligent baseball move. Only Dusty would use a defensive specialist/noted bad hitter as a DH.

Where did Scott Kazmir get his fastball from. In 2011 with the Angels he was not cracking 90 and he was in independant minor leagues in 2012 because nobody wanted him. Gameday shows him hitting 95.

progressive field is a house of horrors for the Reds, they just can't win there the last few seasons no matter how well they're playing going in. Reds could learn a thing or 2 or 3 from Cleveland on how to hit with 2 outs in an inning.

And this is what concerns me for any post season hopes. When was the last time we bunched together hits for a big inning like this without a HR? Too many holes in our line up that kill rallies. #2, #6, #7, #8, #9 positions in the batting order.

Post #137 of this thread reflected unhappiness with Izturis hitting second.

In the context of a 7-0 ballgame against the Reds, I think it's a logical inference that somehow the post was intended to lay blame on Izturis -- at least partial blame.

If I'm incorrect, I'm sure you'll say so.

But it seems Izturis got a hit to load the bases earlier and the Reds' superstar hit into a DP. So I wonder what exactly Izturis did wrong here.

Games like this happen, but this team had a chance to get back into it, to at least cut into the lead. At this point, everyone knows what Izturis is. Well, everyone but Dusty. The lineup mess is Dusty's fault. And no, the score isn't Dusty's fault, but he does shoulder some blame for limiting the Reds ability to sustain a rally to get back into this game.

But I don't get why Izturis is being singled out.

I haven't watched the whole game but a number of Reds have failed to sustain rallies. I've seen Votto and Hanigan hit into double plays. Frazier struck out twice, at least once with a man on, and is now hitting .231. Bailey got hit hard.

I don't know why Izturis is playing tonight, and I know people don't like it when he hits second. But I wouldn't single out the weak hitting backup in this particular game.

My $0.02 worth.

If Choo hits (and lately it's been a struggle) the second hitter must move him over which is something Cozart or Isturis have a hard time doing. Then Votto gets nothing to hit and we end up with no runs. Then it's Phillips, Bruce, and Frazier. Then what? It's the $64,000 question (dating myself here). Couple that with Homer's meltdown, throwing the ball in the sweet spot with two out and this is what you get. Maybe it was the drums,

Now we find ourselves in third place and three games out and playing a Pirate team that everyone says will fade, but no sign of that so far, plus facing two leftys that drive this team nuts. We could be 6 games out by Sunday and yet there is hope. At least I hope there is. I will say this. The only pitchers I trust these days are Cueto and Latos starting and Sam and Chapman from the pen. Hat question. I bought one of the new Reds BP hats. (I'm not proud of myself, but in mitigation I had a gift card.) I like the mesh style, but the bill is like plywood. With the New Era wool fitted hats, I would just wear the thing in the shower and it would sort of mold properly and then dry in place. What is the best way to get the bill properly curved with these hats?

Since I like the old school curve (as EVERYONE should) I still do it in the old style way. Good ole' rubber bands.

What do you band it around to make sure that the curve is even? Or do you just wrap the whole thing.

I wrap the whole thing and do what was also suggested earlier, putting it in a cup.

That's only if I have to, because I always try to buy hats that have the curve I like already. Every once in a while I get a hat as a gift and that's when the problem happens. Those flat bills just look stupid.

ya the Charlotte area is booming and i'm gonna get accustomed to it more the next couple days

I live here in the area. There are quite a few reds zone posters here, need to start a booster group at Buffalo Wild Wings or something. You're not allowed to speak however
