Whoa!!! Look who we have leading off today. How do you like that? I think I might like this. I would seriously reverse Iztouris and Leake. The game today is a 2:20 game time. I don't think their is Reds televison today. It is on the MLB network and a Cubs broadcast.

Reds

1. Derrick Robinson (S) LF
2. Shin-Soo Choo (L) CF
3. Joey Votto (L) 1B
4. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B
5. Jay Bruce (L) RF
6. Todd Frazier (R) 3B
7. Devin Mesoraco (R) C
8. Cesar Izturis (S) SS
9. Mike Leake (R) P

Cubs

1. David DeJesus (L) CF
2. Luis Valbuena (L) 3B
3. Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B
4. Ryan Sweeney (L) LF
5. Nate Schierholtz (L) RF
6. Starlin Castro (R) SS
7. Welington Castillo (R) C
8. Darwin Barney (R) 2B
9. Travis Wood (R) P

Izturis got a double late last night, I wonder if Dusty wants to give him some confidence by playing him and hoping he does ok following that.

I take the decision to hit Choo second as recognition of his trouble v. lefties. Maybe Robinson bunts or slaps his way on and Choo makes a productive out and moves him over.

Otherwise I don't know why he bunched up his lefty hitters against Wood. Travis is better v. lefties (rather than righties) so far this year.

Probably has something to do with the fact Cozart had a good night at the plate last night and Wood is a lefty. It may also have something to do with Izturis being terrible. I simply do not think Cozart should bat in the 2 hole, the organization does not have a better SS at this moment.

I also really like how the lineup is constructed, I just don't understand trotting it out for the first time against a very hot left handed starter. Seems to me this is a setting up a situation where the lineup does not work and after the game Dusty gives a big "told ya so."

Geez, it may have something to do with the fact that Cozart is 1 for 13 with 6 K's against Wood, making today a good opportunity to give Zach a day off. There is, more likely than not, solid reasoning for the lineup changes that Dusty makes if one takes the time to research it. Also, he doesn't like his players rotting on the bench. Each player will get some time on the field.

The Dusty bashing seems to be overtaking these game threads anymore.

Funny. When I saw the lineup earlier I thought that this is the worst lineup of the season by Dusty.

Why bunch up your lefty hitters against Wood? I can speculate, as I did in an earlier post, but on reflection it really makes very little sense to me.

Why sit Cozart against Wood? Four game series, one lefty starter, Wood, so this game you sit him? Izturis is a switch hitter, he can go 0-4 from either side.

Wood doesn't have great control, if the Reds wait him out that might help, but I would have used a very different lineup today.

P.S. I see that Cozart has a poor hitting record against Wood. Fine, but until the team adds some righty pop, I still would have used him.

Still wondering what possessed Baker, a manager consumed with "splitting up the lefties" to bunch them up -- against a lefty.

Against a righty, no problem, would fully support it, the Cubs did it today, five lefties in a row against Leake.

Why suddenly did the Reds bunch their lefties against a lefty? I guess it doesn't matter if the team gets no hits, but just strikes me as a really odd move.

Bruce and Votto are #2 and #3 regulars hitting vs. lefties. Choo moving to second allows the speedster at the front, and potentially gives him the benefit of seeing better pitches with Votto behind him.

I guess mostly this lineup shows the impact of Ludwick's absence against LHP. The only RHH who is hitting lefties hard is Phillips. Reds used to destroy lefty pitching but right now don't have the righty bats to do it.

That has to do with the Pitcher (the most consecutive quality starts by a Cubs pitcher since 1908!), nothing to do with the lineup.

The streak was 9 games and was ended by the Reds. It was the longest streak by a Cubs starter to open a season since Brown- not all starts but to open a season.
http://midwaymadness.com/2013/05/travis-wood-continues-quality-streak-earns-long-term-job/

Today’s performance was Wood’s ninth consecutive quality start dating back to the beginning of the season, which is the longest streak of consecutive quality starts to begin a season in modern Cubs history. The last starter with a longer streak was Mordecai “Three-Finger” Brown all the way back in 1908 (yeah, that year) when he had eleven consecutive (complete game) quality starts.
Looks like their record since 1918 is 11

Lefty hitters don't face lefties that often. Lefty specialists are well versed in retiring lefties. So managers don't like to use multiple lefties in a row if they can help it.

Righty hitters face righties more often.

I would use Choo, Paul/Robinson, Votto, Phillips, Bruce, Frazier.

Geez. I'd like to get back Travis Wood. Can we trade for him? ;)

Once again, only the Brewers are better vs LHP in the NL

The Reds are gangbusters vs LHP versus the rest of the league, which is important because that's who they play

Lefties don't face lefties that often. Lefty specialists are well versed in retiring lefties. So managers don't like to use multiple lefties in a row if they can help it.

Righties face righties more often.

I would use Choo, Paul/Robinson, Votto, Phillips, Bruce, Frazier.

I like Choo, Paul, Votto against righties.

And you are not susceptible to the lefty reliever because you pinch hit a righty batter for XPaul. But, I don't think it's wise to play for "the situational" circumstances that come up throughout the season, but for the majority of occasions that occur. For me, that's where it doesn't matter if you have two lefties back-to-back anywhere in the lineup.

What's funny is Choo is 1 for 3 with a double and a walk

I think you know the response.

The three Reds lefties are 1 for 11 with a walk.

Hope Aroldis is on today. Don't want all those posts saying he should only pitch the seventh, or whatever.

KC can correct me if I am wrong, but I think he is saying this will be exhibit A when Dusty later on says "told ya you have to split up those lefties"

Yes. He split the lefties and they walked his leading base unclogger intentionally.

Can they do that? Don't the cubs get another half inning?

Hope the best for Chapman, but why take out a guy who has given up 3 hits?He throws the opposite of Leake. That should throw them off-balance.

I doubt it. Simply too many REALLY good pitching performances this season.

And this one belongs to the Reds! 20 in a row! :O)
