Cueto takes the mound for the Reds

Lineup:
Robinson 7,
Choo 8,
Votto 3,
Phillips 4,
Bruce 9,
Frazier 5,
Heisey DH,
Mesoraco 2,
Cozart 6,

Vs Martin Perez, LHP
1-1, 3.65 ERA
Perez has made two starts. He lost to the D-backs on May 27 when he allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. He beat the Cardinals, 4-2, last Saturday when he held them to two runs in seven innings. He was 5-1 with a 1.75 ERA at Triple-A.

John Fay ‏@johnfayman 2m

I don't think Mesoraco has ever started in a regular season game in which Cueto started. Checked the lineups the last three years. #reds

In the series opener, the Reds will turn to right-hander Johnny Cueto (4-1, 3.21 ERA), who is coming off of his worst showing of the season. Last Friday in Phoenix, Cueto surrendered seven runs on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings. It marked the most earned runs he had allowed since Sept. 22, 2010.
...
Martin Perez will make his third start of the season for Texas. The 22-year-old southpaw totes a 1-1 record with a 3.65 ERA.
...
• In his first big league outing since late May, Perez limited the Cardinals to two runs on five hits and one walk in seven innings on Saturday. He earned his first victory of the season and needed only 82 pitches. The performance left his skipper impressed. "You didn't see him lose his presence," Washington said. "He just kept pounding the strike zone, changing speeds and working fast. More than anything, though, his mound presence never changed and never wavered. He never had to calm himself down one bit. He was in charge tonight. "I've always seen the stuff, but this is the first time he's shown he's a big league pitcher." Perez stressed the importance of throwing strikes. "Just throw a lot of strikes and attack the zone early," Perez said. "Don't get behind in the count. You get behind in the count and you get in trouble. I just need to do the same thing I did last week."

I'm certainly not ready to give up on this team yet. We've got Phillips back, things have been shaken up in the lineup, and after what's been happening lately, I think this team is getting hungry. Let's see what happens.

I'd love to see them climb on this kid but unexposed young lefties worry me against the Reds. Really I'd rather they faced their ace. Still, this team is going to go crazy against someone soon. Too good to scuffle endlessly even facing a string of good teams.

The hole is there is no one of quality to plug in when the setup man and the LF went down. The Cards and Pirates have had plenty of key pieces go down yet they don't skip a beat. The Reds play injured players (Broxton, Cueto), they bring guys off the DL only to watch them go immediately back on (Marshall, Cueto). They fool around with ill-timed rehab stints (Heisey). They have to bring up people from AA because they have no one at AAA worthwhile.

You have a pitcher who twists his body every time he pitches. He continues to pitch that way.

He is constantly getting injuries to his torso, not arm injuries.

Wouldn't it seem that he needs to take off considerable time to heal; and that he needs a new delivery?

I mean, is it just a coincidence that he has this extreme kind of motion and is now suffering these kinds of injuries?

Scouting issue? Not prepared against AL teams. They see the Indians every year and play them well. Seems like they are just not as prepared or sharp in the other interleague games.

Yes, I would drop Choo way down against lefties. I don't care if it hurts his ego like Dusty is afraid it might do. Dusty used to bench Bruce against lefties and Bruce has worked hard to improve and now one of the best against lefties. It might do Choo some good and take a little pressure off of him.

What sucks as a Reds fan> you watch the Cardinals,D-Backs, Rockies/Pirates lately, A's, Red Sox and Blue Jays, seem to approach every AB as meaningful. when you watch most of the Reds hitters, they look like they are lost especially on the road..they had a day off and they still look like they played 20 games in a row and lost all but 5!!.. I dont see a fire or a urgency. You see that with Cozart,Hanigan/Frazier/Heiesy doing the same thing time after time.. Not accountability.. Just excuses from Baker..
