View Full Version : 7/1/13 Giants @ Reds

Looks like it's gonna be a chance of rain all night. We'll see how badly they want to get this one in.

Red's Lineup

Robinson LF
Choo CF
Votto 1B
Phillips 2B
Bruce RF
Frazier 3B
Cozart SS
Hanigan C
Arroyo P

The pitcher slated to start for the Giants Michael Kickham is a lefty with only 2 career starts and has been hit hard.

2.1 Inn 4H 4R 4ER 4BB
5.1 Inn 8H 6R 5ER 0BB

Hopefully the Reds can take advantage of this young lefty. Right now, however, my confidence is waning.

Reds' hitters versus Giants' pitchers. The resistible force meets the movable object. Should be fun. If I am reading the television guide correctly, tonight's game is on ESPN and tomorrow night's game is on MLB Network. Yay!

Jeff: “Take him out of the game! Take him out of the game.”
Thom: “Ok, but…”
Jeff: “If he can’t bunt take him out of the game. Put somebody else in there.”
Thom: “Ok, but if you believe in the bunt in this situation…”
Jeff: “You’re at home. You have to tie the game.”
Thom: “But that’s a by-the-book kind of thing. I don’t know if there’s anybody on that bench…that you’re going to bring in…”
Jeff: “This guy is NOT a clutch hitter.”

I'm going to tomorrow's game. This will be my third game at GABP this season and each time Homer Bailey has been the starter. What's the odds of that? 1/15? Or are they even lower than that? (They told me there wouldn't be math.)

The Reds won both games I saw Bailey pitch this year. (Bailey got a no-decision each time though -- including the win over the Braves when Mes and Choo hit back-to-back jacks off Kimbrel to win it in the 9th. Other game was against the Marlins on a Sunday.)

Let's hope Bailey makes it 3-for-3 for me tomorrow in terms of Reds' wins. And before you get on my case for "only" going to 3 games so far this year, it's a long haul from Columbus. Especially when you're married with two kids.

You don't add odds, you multiply them.

.2 x .2 x .2 = 8/10ths of 1 %.

Now, I think your question is what are the odds of getting the same pitcher 3 times.

The first pitcher is 100%. So the odds of getting the same pitcher the next two times is 20% X 20% = 4%.

Odds of getting Bailey each time 1 in 5, or (1/5).

You just multiply (1/5)x(1/5)x(1/5) = 1/125.

You can do that with anything you know the odds of.

I'm watching the Giants feed (thank the lord for blackout workarounds) what did he say?

Sorry, just saw this.

Cowboy mentioned that Kickham had been working inside on every pitch to Frazier and that at some point Frazier would sit red on the inside and hammer one. Next pitch was a straight fastball on the inside corner that he hit 400+ feet.

Odds of getting Bailey each time 1 in 5, or (1/5).

You just multiply (1/5)x(1/5)x(1/5) = 1/125.

You can do that with anything you know the odds of.

Thank you sir. Yes, you are talking to a college graduate with a pretty good job who was always terrible at math (save addition and subtraction in early-elementary -- I could hold my own then, yo).

Cool, thanks. I can't handle Thom when the team hasn't been playing well.

Wow. How did you come up with this? I believe you; I just want to know.

(You = Better at math than me. ... which isn't really saying much.)

I figured it wasn't as simple as 1/15, but 1/125 is still lower than I expected. Interesting. I am destined to see Homer Bailey pitch in person this season!

My math skills aren't that great either, but what I just showed you is Probability 101. I encourage you to grasp the basics of figuring out simple odds and you will be able to view things in a whole new light. I enjoy thinking, "what were the odds that x,y,and z just happened?".

A flash flood warning is in effect for Hamilton County (including Cincinnati), Ohio, as well as two counties in Kentucky.

There is now a flood warning for the area. About 2 inches of rain have come down in the last hour with another inch or two expected. I don't know what they are waiting for to call this.

I enjoy this too. And now I'll like it much more since I'm not making WAG's.

If the future radar is any indication, there might be a clearing around midnight-12:30. ... Still coming down steady here in Hamilton w/the occasional thunder and lightning.

Somebody from ESPN decided they wanted to go to SportCenter so they gave Selig the word.

Did Marty say "This one belongs to the Reds" when he announced the game was called?

If not, hella weak.

Even if the rain stopped, it was just so soaked out there. Just made sense to call the game. Right call.

Left field looked like a lagoon on the ESPN wrap-up about ten minutes ago. With the way things have been going, surprised the game didn't get called before being official.

Good to get a 6 inning win making up for the run of extra inning games lately. Although this one helped the Giants much more by saving their pen the rest of the series.

Glad the Reds were declared the winner. I was afraid that Selig had recently implemented a new bizarre rule about incomplete, rained out games that would have awarded the victory in this game to the Cardinals.

Almost 31K tonight on a Monday, pretty impressive considering zero walkup due to the weather and the 2-6 roadtrip.

The Reds seem to have turned the corner on weeknight summer crowds.

By comparison, the Nats had 24K tonight and the Twins just under 30K with the Yankees in town on a perfect night for baseball.

Anyone catch Reds Live last night? They were showing pictures of soggy GABP and it was amazing how much water was filling up some areas. The left field seats had so much water in them you almost had to swim to get to the front row. Yikes!
