Maybe Paul hurt something or what are the stats vs the Mariners SP?

Xavier Paul is limited today after hitting the wall last night. He stayed in the game, but left for a pinch-hitter in bottom of 9

I think he hurt his career. He's swinging at everything, not hitting much of it and is comic gold in the OF. Reds need an OF even if Ludwick comes back.

I agree. The honeymoon is over. This teams needs a legitimate bat for LF and it really can't wait until late-August for Ludwick to return. It needed an upgrade the minute he went down, and they've been fortunate enough to piece together a decent platoon for the most part. But seeing D Rob getting these starts is beginning to make me cringe.

It's kind of late. Reds FO should have added an outfielder months ago. I doubt they will make a meaningful outfield move unless Ludwick has a setback. Otherwise, they will wait for Ryan.

I think Paul will snap out of it and come back. He's entitled to a slump like all the other Babe Ruths on this team. But Paul is a fourth outfielder in any event.

The Reds just have too many outs in their lineup these days and the front office decided awhile back to let it ride. And it has.

My only real beef with management is not having some kind of half way workable solution at catcher in Louisville. Surely there is a better option out there than Corky.

As a change of pace, I don't mind the Reds' lineup today. Against a righty pitcher, having Cozart and Frazier out for a day is ok with me. Paul hasn't been hitting, no big loss there.

Would prefer Mesoraco, although Ryan has looked somewhat better of late at the bat.

The guys who are sitting basically aren't doing anything so let's give this a try for one game.

Hannahan will hit better, actually I think he's shown a bit more lately. His usual numbers are better than this.

Izturis isn't a hitter, but I'd give him a game or two. Cozart alternates between grounders to third and pop ups to short right. Watch Zack, it's one or the other almost every time.

Couple of weeks ago I was lampooned by several game thread participants when I lamented our loss against the Pirates in the 4th game of the 4 game series as being a big loss. "It's one out of 162 - stop talking, moron." Our bullpen yet again blew a lead. At that point, we were in 2nd, PIT in 3rd and STL was in 1st.

Skip to today. We're in 3rd. STL 2nd. PIT has taken off and has the best record in baseball.

Since that game...

PIT = 10-2.

CIN = 5-7.

Cite the schedule if you wish...but the Pirates had a west coast trip during that time...in which they swept the very Mariners who are taking us to school.

Sometimes there are big games...even though each one only counts for one win or one loss.

Mark my words. This is one of those games.

I don't think it's too late. Guys are just now becomng available. If they can add a guy it pushes Robinson out and upgrades now. There is still likely 5 to 6 weeks before we see Ludwick and he may have a set-back a la Marshall or Cueto. I don't think I'd count on anyone on the DL. I'd pursue good role players for the OF and pen and if they all come back, there is enough borderline talent on the roster to still have room for the new guys and the DL guys. Now that guys are out there. no need to wait. Doesn't need to be a star to be an upgrade. A good Denorfia type wouldn't cost much and would be a big upgrade. Ludwick needs rest and Choo should sit more often against RHP. Even if Ludwick returns, they need a guy who can play.

Adding a Denorfia now is fine, but I think he costs more than you suggest, and I think the impact is limited. The time to make a move was in April or May. A World Series contender that loses its cleanup hitter needs to make a move sufficiently early to have a real effect.

IMO the top organizations in sports, when losing an important player early, make sure they can cover that position. They don't say "it's too early," they act.

The fan base, IMO, has been very kind to the Reds on this. A top FO doesn't say, well, nobody is available we'll wait until July 31. And the inaction has hurt the team IMO.

Counting today, the Reds have 9 games before the ASB and trail two teams in their division (Pirates by 4.5 games). They are in a bit of a funk and the fear is that they could hit the break and be 7 games back.

I agree that the Reds need to add something substantial either in the pen or offensively (how about both?).

I don't accept this. It's the traditional excuse, but IMO it's a complete cop out.

Yes, teams don't conduct fire sales early.

But there are teams with outfield depth who have other needs and could improve with a good trade. It's the FO's job to find those teams and figure out a deal.

The Reds have needed another bat for months. They chose a very conservative approach to this problem. It hasn't worked IMO.

This sounds like criticizing Walt for not doing something no one else can do. It's like those who harp on Dusty saving Chapman for the 9th when every other Manager does the same. Where are all these players who were dealt? The Yankees really needed help and all they could do was take on huge contracts. The Tigers have been looking for help in the pen and LF all year. The Giants OF has been thin. THe Phillies IF was thin. Nobody made moves. The Dodgers are the only team who added and that was from their minor leagues when they brought up Puig.

there are plenty of managers that will bring their closer in the 8th

Well, I was referring to the crowd that says forget "closer" and bring him in whenever there is a threatening situation after the starter exits. I wouldn't mind seeing Chapman get a 4 out save now and then, but he goes south if he pitches 2 days in a row, I'm not sure 4 out saves are a good idea with this particular closer.
