No lineup or transaction announced yet. Probably waiting to see if Mesoraco or Hanigan can catch. #Reds @Cincienquirer
Reds
#Reds lineup:
Choo 8,
Cozart 6,
Votto 3,
Phillips 4,
Bruce 9,
Heisey 7,
Hannahan 5,
Hanigan 2,
Cingrani 1.

Q: Is this the first time we have had Hannahan and Hanigan back to back in the starting lineup. It must be the first time those two have followed Heisey. If only Homer was on the mound...

Brewers lineup

1. Aoki
2. Segura
3. Braun
4. Gomez
5. Weeks
6. Halton
7. Maldonado
8. Betancourt
9. Peralta

Because someone will ask ...

*In case you missed the notebook update to my story on Ryan Hanigan and Devin Mesoraco both hurting, Dusty Baker said that 3B Jack Hannahan is the emergency third catcher for the Reds. http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/2013/07/09/game-90-at-mil/
I guess it makes sense to someone (not me) to have Hannahan in the lineup if he is your emergency catcher and both others are already hurting. Who is the fourth option? Ondrusek?

Well, I'd rather be playing the Mud Hens after the way the Brewers knocked Homer around, but I think at this juncture I'd stick with Cingrani over Sharky.

Yeah sorry I thought I had the cut and paste set to the right link but I did not. Maybe in two years on this date Sharky will be in Cincy pitching against Milwaukee and this will seem very prescient.

Baker said he didn’t know if the club was looking outside the organization.

“There’s not a whole lot available,” he said. “Nobody’s doing anything. There’s a lot of teams that think they’re still in it. You don’t see a lot of transactions. I don’t have a lot of answers. Not all these decisions are mine.”

Hanigan got a cortisone shot yesterday.

“Hopefully, it helps,” he said. “I don’t want to talk about it a whole lot.”

FanGraphs audio interview with Tony Cingrani.

He started with a slider and worked it into a curve. And now he is back throwing the harder slider. So Cingrani now has a curve, slider, change up and the fastball.

It's difficult to show excitement or fire as you walk to the bench after striking out.

The problem is that they can't hit at all. They are in a team-wide six week long slump that shows no signs of abating. It will, of course, at some point, because no one can be this bad forever. Hopefully it's not too late when that transpires.

As I said on an earlier thread, but was chastised severely, Cingrani is a fly ball pitcher and he can't walk guys too much.

Arroyo, a different kind of pitcher, also allows homers but almost never walks anyone. Cingrani either needs to throw more grounders, unlikely, or needs to avoid walks.

Now...Mike Brown is a buffoon 100 times over what Bob C is but like Bob...he sticks with coaches and managers who we all know are not going to take them any farther than what they already have done.

I also think again like 2011....Walt seems to loathe making many moves during the season.

Giants Designate Cole Gillespie For Assignment

By Zach Links [July 9 at 6:10pm CST]

The Giants have designated outfielder Cole Gillespie for assigment, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). The move will make room for the promotion of second baseman Kensuke Tanaka.

It's the second move made today by the Giants, who agreed to sign Jeff Francoeur early this morning. Gillespie, 29, had a cup of coffee with the major league club this month. In 269 plate appearances for the club's Triple-A affiliate this season, Gillespie slashed .277/.361/.455 with nine homers.

I don't talk to GMs. I don't know who was available or the price.

But I do know this. Many teams are not contenders who would prefer prospects to veterans. That early in the season the demands may be relatively high. That a team like the Reds, a supposed contender, should be willing to mortgage the future just a bit to cure a current problem.

That WAS a boundary play....the home plate ump was bordering on insanity.

Not to defend the ump, but when the play happened, he looked out.

Only replay showed he was safe.

i just dont get Dusty.. yoiur hotest hitter is Hiesey, so you want him to bat 7th?????????? while your worst hitter hits 2nd????? Just think if he had been smart, and batted Hiesey 2nd, he doesnt get hit and still in the game.. now our hottest hitter is out of the game and the offense cant buy a hit and the ump looking right at the play and still got it wrong.. goodness

If this team has to depend on Heisey we might as well pack it in right now.

How many times in your history of Reds' fandom have you said, "their pitching has been consistently good all season, but their offense just gets worse and worse?".

Yep, first time for me too.

Your first part of your post was all you needed to say. You know nothing. It's not an insult, it's true. You know nothing, I know nothing. You can't sit here and pound the table and say do something when you don't know what is going, who is available, and what is being asked.

If Walt were to come out and say, we have searched the universe to upgrade the offense but have not obtained a meaningful offer to trade us a good hitter, I'd accept that. I don't have any information to the contrary.

But it just seems intuitively that that's not what happened

My own view? Reds made a series of judgments that went bad. Expected Heisey to fill in capably for Ludwick. Underestimate length of Heisey's injury absence. Thought Frazier, Cozart, Hanigan, Mes would get hot, or some would.

And of course we all underestimate how well the Pirates and Cards would do through this point. Management included IMO.

I would have wanted a more aggressive approach to filling the injury absences and improving the offense. Other than from posters here, I have no information that it was not possible.
