View Full Version : Does anybody know why Jim Day is the play by play announcer?

He's been the pbp guy for this series and I believe 2 of the Milwaukee games.

Don't know why, but I hope it continues. He's better than the regular guys (except he thinks every fly ball is a deep drive).

Probably just giving the regulars some mid-summer vacation time. Haven't they done this in the past?

You are the first person I have seen that has said anything even remotely in favor of the job he has done.

Better voice than Kelch (but I like Kelch).
Better everything else than Marty or Thom.
Doesn't offend my ears with clumsy english like Brantley or Casey.
Welch is a color guy. I like George Grande as well.

I actually kind of like him. He isn't a great announcer, but I'll take some sunshine over the usual dose of whininess from a certain Frick Award winner's son.

There is so much dead air when he is making the call it is painful. I get that it is TV, so I can see what is going on. But there is 10 seconds of silence between every pitch.

Which some of us enjoy very much. Sometimes just listening to the ambient noise is nice.

Beats the heck out of the rants of Marty and Thom. I've actually not noticed the dead air. I have noticed the lack of noise pollution.

Day has been a disaster. He's misidentified players. He's mispronounced their names, some badly (see Turtle Slovich). Worst of all, he thought it was acceptable to give his Elvis impersonation the other night.

Marty won't ever be on tv, so that doesn't come into play at all for me. Thom stinks. That doesn't mean Jim Day is doing a good job because it is preferable to what Thom does.

I didn't say he was great, just that he's better than the usual bozos.
It's not really that important to me. I have a mute button. As long as the game is on, I'm happy.

Actually, I DO know why Day is doing pbp...because I like it. Thanks, Bob.
I like dead air, the deader the better. Announcers like Ray Scott (Starr...to Taylor...touchdown) were dominating the biz until blowhard John Madden turned it into a circus with their incessant "look at me and how much I know" carnival barking.
I realize they are football announcers, but Madden ramped up the acceptable verbage load for every announcer in pretty much every sport.

I like Day, he reminds me of George Grande (who I liked) without the enthusiasm for the other team scoring/making a great play.
Chris Welsh is not only the best color guy the Reds have, but one of the best in all of baseball, IMO.

Welsh is great! I actually think he has grown and become even better since George left. I think Welsh tries to bring many different aspects to the game and isn't afraid to learn new things. He's tremendous in my opinion.

Jim Day is pretty bad, but at least he leaves most of the goofy act and corny jokes in the pre/post-game shows. He's a lot better than he used to be at PBP.
I remember sometime around 2005-2006, he had to fill-in for some reason, and he was awful. So bad in fact I think they brought in Dan Hoard to replace him.

One thing I like about Day is when he says, "And not a productive out." Too bad it seems like he says it 10 times a game.

That reminds me of Harry Caray, who called everything "a drive" in his last few years. I particularly remember him screaming, "There's a drive ... fielded by Cey who throws him out at first."

The Reds have to be coming close to setting a record for largest stable of announcers in baseball history. Off the top of my head, I'm coming up with 8 people who have called games (either radio or TV) for the team in just THIS season.

We might be able to get it to 10. Have Doug Flynn or Joe Morgan worked games this year?

I feel like Tim Kremcheck probably worked his usual game in Spring, but I don't recall it specifically and I'm not certain what the rules are for counting that as an "official" announcer appearance.
Also, (in the style of the dmbalmanac) -- announcers who have appeared in previous tours but have yet to debut this year:
- Kent Mercker
- Dan Hoard
- Paul Keels
- Doug Flynn
- Joe Morgan

Reds have a very large number of part time broadcasters. It seems as if none of them are full time.
Vin Scully is jealous, as the Dodgers keep chaining an 97 yo man to the broadcasting chair, and forcing him to do 9 innings of work, day after flippin day, for 6 months. Since 1937, or thereabouts.
By himself.

He did screw that one up. You can't anticpate a play when you are calling a game. But overall I didn't think he was bad at all. With more experience he could be pretty good. I prefer him over Thom's rants anyday. For my money Thom can go ahead and go to FOX and do football the rest of the year. I've heard quite enough of him.

A few weeks ago Welsh did PBP on the radio, and while he wasn't polished, I definitely think he's the best of the bunch after Marty.
Listening yesterday was just painful. Not sure who was calling (I think it was Kelch) but when Votto got on (after Choo got on), then Brandon doubled him home, the announcer said something along the lines of "it's a hit by Phillips, Votto scores, and the other runner scores."
Sorry, but when you can't even paint with words the most basic picture that's right in front of you, you shouldn't be doing PBP of major league games.

I've always kinda felt bad for thinking this because Jim Day really seems like a good guy but I think he is completely horrible on the pre-game and post-game shows. I'm not sure how long he has been doing it; it's been years. I am just amazed that there is not a higher demand for that kind of job. So naturally, I cringed when I heard him on play by play the this weekend. I honestly watched some of the Braves broadcast.

I personally feel Jim Day does an excellent job on pre and post game shows, his personality is one of my favorite aspects of Reds on Fox Sports.
Reading this thread, and the countless other threads on this board critiquing the broadcasters, it is painfully obvious that it is impossible for the Reds to put together a presentation that pleases everyone.
As long as it's not Thom drama queen Brennaman broadcasting, I'm satisfied

Like actual baseball, you don't gain experience doing PBP at the major league level because you get quality like this. If they want him to gain experience have him drive up to Dayton or down to Louisville.

I'm willing to cut Jim Day some slack on the pregame/postgame shows.
He's got like an hour to fill? And he really can't go into indepth discussion because that's not his audience. The pregame/postgame shows are light filler to keep you watching more commericals.. I kind of like his goofy humor. I'm glad the shows aren't yet another sports debating format.

Everybody loved Thom when he showed up, now he's a pariah. I don't figure Jim Day would last very long.
I think Kelch has the Bad Boy Steve Stewart feel, and I just like him because on the radio he make it sound like he's coming through a 1930's radio.

Not quite. At best, a small majority briefly liked him after years George Grande. Otherwise the same complaints were leveled against him in his first year of 2007 as they are now.

True, I do think it wouldn't take long for Day to get old, either. The point is, and perhaps the Reds know this, familiarity breeds contempt, so they rotate the announcers a lot.

I think Day is terrible, but I like him. I like his voice quality and optimism. He screws up names and thinks anything a Reds player hits is in the gap or a HR, but I'm watching it on TV. I don't care. Just a breath of fresh air to not hear the same complaints over and over when Baker chooses to do anything that doesn't work. Idleness? Should have got the runners in motion. Runners in motion and a strike em out throw em out? Should have known that would happen. Day sounds like a fan that is getting a couple weeks to live the dream.
