Jeff Locke a lefty with a 2.15 ERA in 109 IP. His k/9 is only 6.0, his BB/9 is a high 3.9. He has a .231 BABIP with a 4.6% HR/FB ratio. Today is the day it catches up to him.

Sorry Mes isn't playing today. He's hitting lefties well and Reds could use every bit of offense today.

Otherwise, good lineup against this guy.

It doesn't matter who they are, when a guy comes to the Reds, he forgets how to run the bases. Been that way for 10 years at least.

Falls City Beer

Why this team attempts to steal against LHers as often as they do, I don't know.

Kiko
07-21-2013, 01:21 PM
That was a close play on the steal. Choo probably would have been safe with a hook slide.

dougdirt
07-21-2013, 01:23 PM
I still don't understand why teams try to steal in front of their best hitters. Why risk it? The best hitters can drive guys in from first. Steal in front of the guys that can't hit, the base/out risk may actually be worth it.

With Reds sporting a MLB-worst 54% success rate in SB, I'm thinking they shouldn't bother at all, regardless of batting order or handed ness of the pitcher. Lord, I didn't know it was that bad.

The home run ball still counts as at least one run for the hitting team. Without a lot of mess. Pirates are hitting them, the Reds might try one or two.

True, but 50 pitches through 3 is not going to save the bullpen. Given usage in last two days and 11 games in the next 10 days, that is important.

I don't think I was clear. The arg. is that Locke has too low HR rate, and that it's bound to correct. It will, but not as dramatically as it would 10 years ago.

Sorry, didn't understand your point. I don't know much about Locke so I have no view on it.

But here is something I do have a view on. Corky Miller has been a great organization guy for the Reds. But it is inconceivable that he is playing this game.

Not sure if Mesoraco's back was acting up, but against the main competitors you have to have 8 hitters in the lineup.

The Reds really messed up the catcher position this season. Given Hanigan's wear and tear and given Mes' relative lack of experience, this team needed to have a Navarro type in the wings.

I hope Corky proves me wrong and hits two grand slams today. But c'mon, Walt.

Yeah, but you know FCB, I can live with Mes playing most of the time. He has a lot to learn IMO but his hitting isn't terrible. But Hanigan just doesn't hit anymore and Corky Miller belongs in the coaching box at this point.

I'm hung up on this, I know, sorry I've repeated this, but I don't think you can have non-hitters in an NL lineup. Maybe one non-hitter if you have six or seven excellent bats.

At minimum, Miller should have been used on the west coast and Mes today in a more head-to-head situation.

I won't keep on this, on to the next issue.

And the heart of our order goes down on seven pitches.

The pitch Heisey swung at I'd have him do every time.

Sorry but I don't subscribe to the number of pitches being the litmus test for whether plate appearances are quality. Heisey had a good pitch to hit and gave it a ride.

Votto is as patient a hitter as you'll find, so when he swings early, it's probably for a very good reason.

Giving Locke a seven pitch inning isn't a formula to driving him out of the game and getting into that bullpen. Especially considering the inning he had in the fifth.

You typically spook anytime a pitcher goes past 75 pitches.

I saw no signs of Homer tiring. He was still throwing strikes, had pretty good velocity, good movement and was mostly hitting his spots.
