Fortunately I chose Friday night over last night's collective team debacle. So I plan to bring good fortune again this afternoon...

That inning is a perfect example of the power of defense and why one shouldn't ignore pitcher peripherals in favor of ERA, especially with the Reds staff. Pitchers on the Reds get so much help from their defense. That Padres would've scored a bare minimum of 1 run that inning with the Ms defense behind him....who knows how many an extra out or two could lead to?

1. Where in the budget were the Reds supposed to upgrade SS, 3B, and LF? Every team has to rely on young players. The Cards have kids like Carpenter, Martinez, Miller, and Lynn who have come up big for them this year, our young guys haven't performed as well but there is no way of knowing which young guys are going to come through in the bigs.

2. Hannahan is probably having the worst year of his career, I doubt Walt planned on that happening.

3. Walt upgrades CF and you still complain, seems like a lose-lose situation for him.

4. There were no good bats on the market. If you payed any attention at all to the trade deadline you would know that it was extremely hard to make a trade because no one wanted to sell. It takes two teams to make a trade happen.

Votto is one of the top 5 most impactful offensive players in baseball.

Choo is top 15.

Yes. I am personally satisfied.

The problem has been, and remains, the left side of fail. C, SS and LF have been an unmitigated offensive disaster this year.

You're giving too much weight to the defense.

The context of the original question was purely offense so keep that in mind.

As a follow up to put the offense in perspective;

Reds wRC+ MLB rank by position:

1B: 2nd
CF: 3rd
RF: 5th
3B 16th
2B: 20th
LF: 26th
C: 26th
SS: 27th

Not real hard to see where the issues are imo.

1. 1000's of posts have addressed logical solutions to this.

2. Hanahan is having the exact year I expected from him based on age projection.

3. Choo was not an upgrade in Center. He's an upgrade in Left and an upgrade to the top of the order. Either sign only Choo, only Ludwick, or Ludwick to be the 4th Outfielder.

4. There's always a way to make a trade happen. Most players are available at the right price. There were three Cubs available (not Soriano) who would have helped greatly and cost little.

5. $2.5M more would have been available had Rick Sweet been Manager instead of Dusty.

6. For the record, I have yet to see a poster on this site who has supported Walt and the two previous G. M.'s as much or as well as I have, so you're suggestion that all things that happen will only generate a complaint from me is nothing but empty banter.

Not to mention that the play Frazier made was one heck of a great pitch. Leake shattered the guy's bat with a terrific pitch up and in, and it only would have been a hit because of bad luck as to where the ball dropped.

Some people have had an agenda against Leake for three years, though, and they will use every opportunity they can to say something bad about him.

I apparently have missed 1000's of posts.

2. Hanahan is having the exact year I expected from him based on age projection.

Hannahan is a bench player with a very solid glove. I'm really trying to understand why we're even concerned with him at all. He'll run into a couple of HR's and hits here and there, but he's on the team for his glove.

3. Choo was not an upgrade in Center. He's an upgrade in Left and an upgrade to the top of the order. Either sign only Choo, only Ludwick, or Ludwick to be the 4th Outfielder.

Choo was an upgrade in center. Overall. Yes, he's a downgrade defensively. But take offense and defense as a whole, yes he's an upgrade. But here's the thing...without Choo in center...who do you have playing center?

4. There's always a way to make a trade happen. Most players are available at the right price. There were three Cubs available (not Soriano) who would have helped greatly and cost little.

2 things. Our farm system is considerably depleted over the past year or 2. And the guys we DO have down there are struggling mightily this season. Trading them is selling low on them as trade chips. And it takes 2 to tango. Trades don't just happen, you've got to have a trade partner who wants what you have.

5. $2.5M more would have been available had Rick Sweet been Manager instead of Dusty.

And you're assuming that the team would've played better with Rick Sweet? I'll never get the Dusty hate around here. Never.

6. For the record, I have yet to see a poster on this site who has supported Walt and the two previous G. M.'s as much or as well as I have, so you're suggestion that all things that happen will only generate a complaint from me is nothing but empty banter.

1. No, there is no logical solutions. Every single year the Reds, and every other baseball team for that matter, have to rely on young players who may or may not be able to play at the big league level. There is no way to avoid this.

2. After having a .793, .647, .623, .719, and .654 OPS over his career, you knew that Jack would have a .581 OPS this year? You should be employed in the Reds' front office.

3. A Ludwick-Choo-Bruce outfield is absolutely better than a Ludwick-Stubbs-Bruce outfield. There is no arguing that Walt upgraded the outfield in the offseason.

4. If there were so many trade opportunities available then why were there only 4 trade deadline moves made? It isn't because every team is satisfied with there lineup. No one was selling.

5. I doubt Sweet would be able to handle the clubhouse as well as Dusty. Changing managers could definitely disrupt this team's balance when you consider what a great player's manager Dusty is.

6. If you complain about the Choo trade, then you obviously hard to please.

Career OPS+ of 109. 120 This year and 115 last year. Better defender than he gets credit for. I've wanted the Reds to get him for 3 years now. He'd be a perfect guy to pair with Ludwick and could be part of the Mix next year when Choo leaves.

Hoping when Ludwick comes back he hits .400 with 30 HR's in last 45 games, that might salvage the offense

I'd describe it as a fait accompli. He'll surrender runs in his next start, probably several.

He is not Pedro Martinez or Greg Maddux. He just isn't.

You're right, he's not. But you also don't have to be a hall of famer to throw a shutout either. He's a good pitcher. You can twist that anyway you want to, but it's a fact. A good pitcher throwing a good outing can shut down ANY team.

Who has said such a thing? Decent pitchers are capable of having shutdown days, that's all.

I know the negativity has worn people out but it really is disappointing that most likely the biggest series of the season will be a series with Diamondbacks.

Sure you don't let them but I'd imagine that just about every team that's ever won the WS has lost a series to a crappy team at home during the last few moths of the season.

Does that make it a good thing?

I was thinking when Hoover got behind 2-0 to Denorfia, he should just put him on first. Glad he didn't listen to my inner-self.

Don't get me wrong. I think he'd be a good addition as well. He just strikes me as a guy who plays better against us for some reason.

No. And no one would say yes to that silly question.

But a remark that "if you are a legit team you don't lose at home in August to a crappy team" is uncalled for.

He's a historically decent pitcher having a bad season.

I don't know why it really matters that much. People want to make the playoffs. Once the playoffs start, it won't matter who the biggest series was against.

I'm sure everyone would love for the Reds to win the division. That might not happen. But the thing is, if the Reds win one game, they will be in the same position they'd be in if they'd won the division.

Had to have Reds take my boy to their cool room. He wasn't feeling well. It's actually the media interview room. He is now feeling better. Neat room to watch a game from if you must.

One hit. It would be one thing if they were stinging balls into gloves all day but came up empty.

They've been hacking per their getaway day routine.

I think they can back into playoff spot. I'm not ready to pronounce their season over. They have some brutal offensive habits.

BS. Wild card or not, they aren't a real contender.

The Rays, Giants (twice) and Cardinals' fans were probably saying similar things the past five years. All of them made the World Series with three of them winning it because of pitching and defense.
