Is this the McCarthy who got hit in the head last year pitching?
yes

Brandon McCarthy, RHP
2-7, 4.84 ERA

McCarthy is making his fourth start since coming off the disabled list. In his last outing against the Pirates, he allowed four runs in seven innings. He has struggled to command his cut fastball of late.
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2013_08_21_arimlb_cinmlb_1#gid=2013_ 08_21_arimlb_cinmlb_1&mode=probables

http://arizonasports.com/42/1651612/Dbacks-McCarthy-ready-to-rejoin-rotation

McCarthy has landed on the disabled list in each of his last five seasons with a shoulder injury and his current stint is the eighth of his career.

Last September, while pitching for the Oakland Athletics, the 30-year-old suffered a head injury from a line drive hit off the bat of Erick Aybar, requiring emergency brain surgery and requiring him to sit out for the rest of the season. McCarthy suffered a seizure related to the 2012 head injury back in early June -- an incident he said wouldn't be a setback in his injury rehabilitation.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2013_08_21_arimlb_cinmlb_1

Still looking for his first win since coming off the disabled list at the beginning of August, Brandon McCarthy will toe the rubber for the D-backs. In his last start, the 30-year-old surrendered four runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings of work against the Pirates. Afterwards, he confessed that one pitch in particular has been limiting his ability to get hitters out.

"Mostly my cutter hasn't come back off the DL with me," McCarthy said. "I don't know where that's gone, but it hasn't been sharp. It hasn't been the pitch that I'd like it to be, so I've had to rely on my sinker, which is OK, but if I can complement it with something else -- it's kind of been a one-pitch show for the last few starts. To be successful, I need to add some more in there."

Broxton may be available tonight.

http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/2013/08/21/broxton-wasnt-available/

“He hasn’t been [available],” Baker said Wednesday. “I think he’s OK tonight but he wasn’t OK last night or the night before.”

Baker would not disclose the issue with Broxton specifically. Broxton missed nearly two months with a strain in his elbow and returned on Aug. 7.

“It’s similar stuff,” Baker said. “We just have to take care of him.

“Hopefully he is available tonight. We need him tonight. Our bullpen is kind of spent.”

Being 5 games ahead of Arizona and 2 games left in the series means we really need to win one of these two last games. You can't let them creep to 3 games out.

Winning tonight certainly eases the pressure, much like our win on Monday did.

And a win tonight gives us a chance to make them 7 back tomorrow.

His defense, arm and speed/baserunning were among the best in the league for a decade. Then there's that whole 220+ hits a season. He makes a pretty good case for one of the 10 or 15 best all around players IMO.

Pretty big news here also, but not because it's a rare occurrence. But because the young A$$ holes did it because they said they were F'n bored!
