Glad to see Latos on the Mound today. A win today and the Reds can really put some distance between themselves and the D-backs. Hopefully Mat can get some run support and the bullpen to work behind him. He could very easily be at 15 wins right now had the pieces of the puzzle worked out in his favor.

I'm surprised by that lineup. Usually Dusty gives the day games to the bench guys. Especially since this is a right handed pitcher I would have expected Paul to maybe get a start, Hannahan to get a start, and possibly Izturis to get a nod too.

Maybe Dusty is hoping to keep guys hot going into the weekend series?

Dbacks lineup. Cahill's numbers look a lot like McCarthy's. Hopefully the Reds can rattle around Cahill too.

1. Gerardo Parra (L) RF

2. Adam Eaton (L) CF

3. Paul Goldschmidt (R) 1B

4. Martin Prado (R) 3B

5. Aaron Hill (R) 2B

6. Jason Kubel (L) LF

7. Wil Nieves (R) C

8. Didi Gregorius (L) SS

9. Trevor Cahill (R) P

The Dbacks leaving Cincy with nothing gained is big....but leaving having lost a game is even bigger. Dusty putting this line-up out there signifies its importance.

Mez's bat of late has earned him a place at the big table. Hanny is better behind it, but right now Mez is better at it (although Hanigan has shown some life recently).

Home plate umpire today is Will Little, who I coincidentally know very little about. He has never ump'd behind the plate for Latos or Cahill in their careers.

Is he a recent callup from the minors? The ump's tight zone last night was getting a little annoying, and it would help if Latos doesn't get flustered with a zone like that today.

Ah, looks like Will Little debuted in the majors just a short time ago:

Major League Umpiring Debut: Will Little
Will Little made his MLB Umpiring debut Monday night during the Indians-Orioles game. Little joined Ted Barrett's crew and umpired at third base. Little worked alongside 2B Umpire Barrett, 1B Umpire Mike DiMuro and Home Plate Umpire Scott Barry, filling in for MLB regular Alfonso Marquez.

He was the home plate umpire in this game: http://tricitiessports.com/uvawise-finally-wins-game-that-would-not-end-p17536.htm?twindow=Default&smenu=89&mad=No

It was at the time and still the worst call I've ever seen. Police had to line the field to finish the game.

I literally could not read it. Weird.
The solution is easy enough-- just highlight the text. But, yeah, without doing so, it's essentially impossible to read. I can only assume it was some sort of coding error, because I took a look at some other articles on the site and they all looked fine-- black on white.

Well the Reds are presented w/ an opportunity to do something I think we all would have taken coming off the weekend, winning 3 or 4 vs the team directly behind them for the last WC spot while at worst staying even w/ the 2 teams directly ahead of them them in the divsion chase playing teams running out the string.

After today there will be 34 games left (for the Reds, Arizon has 36 games left)

If the Reds win, they'll have a 7 game lead

Go .500 the rest of the season (17-17) the Dbacks would have to go 25-11 (.694%) to tie the Reds
Go 14-20, and the DBacks have to go 22-14 (.611%)
Go 11-23, and the DBacks have to go 19-17 (.527%, or about their current winning %)

On the flip side, if the Reds lose, they'd end the day 5 games ahead of the DBacks, meaning that if they go 13-21 down the stretch, which is still pretty bad, the DBacks would only have to win at the current clip (19-17) the rest of the way to catch the Reds.

I hope all my math is correct, but in short either way it would take a either a pretty large collapse or an extremely hot streak for the DBacks to catch the Reds. If the Reds won today, its going to take a little bit of both for the DBacks to catch the Reds.

And thusly, Dusty is going w/ his A team today, hoping to put the DBacks out of site in his review mirror. There are still quite a few games w/ St Louis & Pittsburgh, so a .500 finish going forward isn't garunteed.

klw

I know taking pitches is a balancing act. When a pitcher is struggling with command a batter may get a fat pitch to take advantage of but you don't want to help them out. What the Reds often do and are doing today is maddening to observe.

Ex. 2nd inning- Mez walks on 5 pitches, Cozart on 4, 1st two pitches to Latos are swinging strikes. Why on earth did he not have a take sign? The odds of him doing something with a fat pitch are not great so why let the pitcher maybe find a groove.
3rd inning- Votto walks on 4 pitches, 2 balls to Phillips then he swings on possible ball 3 and certainly not a wheelhouse pitch. Bruce walks on 4 pitches. Cahill has now thrown 10 of 11 pitches (maybe even 11 in a row) as balls. First two to Ludwick are balls- then he starts swinging. For him to swing it better be a fat pitcher and he better do damage. He eventually k'd (looking) to end the inning.
4th- After 4 walks in 2 innings, the Mez starts off making an out on the first pitch and Cozart takes two balls before starting to swing. So much for letting Latos get a breather and continuing to work the count. The D'Backs have a spent pen and the Reds should be doing everything to drive up the pitch count and should stop letting Cahill off the hook.

Most of the issues that are brought up are not performance related, or effort related, but are just the game being played in a competitive environment. So I chill and enjoy the game.

For example, Thom just called this a good game, but he's been whining incessantly about the Reds inability to score when they had opportunities. Yet Latos does a good job getting out of jams.

This Cahill performance reminds me of our back of rotation guys--sometimes the other team just doesn't get the big hit. That's the story today. And now they can't get anything going.

Frankly, I can't blame him for trying to make something happen. This is just another display of the offensive shortcomings of this team.

World Champions destroy guys like this pitcher Cahill. Just an unacceptable game on offense for the Reds.

And the irony in that situation is that Votto ended up being the one that looked asleep and took the team out of any further offensive potential that half inning. Certain dont mind the aggressive idea, but the execution was clearly absent.

Individual moments in the game (like Votto attempting to steal, or the GODP by Cozart there) can be frustrating, but I know that Arizona is fighting for their playoff lives here. I expect nothing but the best from them today, and we seem to be getting it from their pitcher. He's been wild, true, but he also hasn't been giving up the hits. Latos traditionally struggles late in games. Baker said earlier this year that they were trying to "stretch him out" (or words to that effect) which I took to mean that they want to address that problem.

I suspect the reason his average outing is 6.5 innings is that he is so difficult to hit earlier in games.

Just a sense that this "problem" has really improved of late. I must say that I can hardly remember the Reds with a better young pitcher than Latos. Not in a very long time.

Since the Diamonbacks are short of pitchers, they didn't want to walk Votto and have the lefty pitch to Phillips. They decided to go after Votto, and if they got him, they would walk Phillips to get to the lefty Bruce.

But since they've brought in the RH to face Philips, I'm not sure why they simply didn't walk Votto?Crazy, isn't it?

The RBI walk/wild pitch, Votto is a God!!!!

I don't disagree with your post, but if Joey Votto walking throws a wrench in your plans, it was probably a bad plan.

I think it's the extremes the OP was referring to. It can be frustrating, whether it's reality or not. Didn't think it was right for people to take him to task for being frustrated. It's normal to be.

It wouldn't be that difficult to put together numbers for how consistent or inconsisten the Reds are compared to others. Has it been done?

I think he was saying that he's not sure if they even had one since they brought in a righty to face Phillips anyway.

I would have walked Votto and brought in the righty to try to get the one out. Then load the bases with Bruce on first and pitch to the next hitter.

Gotcha. I assume their plan involved getting Votto out and if they only needed 1 more out they were going to walk BP and face Bruce as he suggested. Votto walking meant they need multiple outs and 1st base wasn't open... so they aborted that plan.

John Fay ‏@johnfayman 3h

Baker said he didn't know who would close today if the #Reds need one. It won't be Chapman. He threw 35 pitches last night.

If I had a $100 for every time somebody posted that "their gut didn't feel good about this" on RedsZone, I'd be driving a Porsche 911 instead of a 2005 Honda Accord.
