Wheels don't fall off based on one game in the marathon they call a baseball season.

The randomness of baseball ensures they is little momentum (either positive or negative) during the baseball season.

If you wonder why the Reds (or any other team for that matter) sometimes look unbeatable and sometimes look like that couldn't find their bats with two hands and a map, look simply to the randomness of baseball.

Sometimes you can do all the right things and lose, and sometimes you can do all the wrong things and win.

If they lose today, I doubt the wheels come off. Perhaps a lug nut might though?

I think we're going to win though.

Is the excuse for this team going 2-5 against the Brewers, with what basically has been almost a full Triple A club during this time.....randomness?

I can understand losing 2 out of 3 to the Cubs...after beating them up all year, even two games they lost in the 8th with 2 to 4 run leads by Ondrusek and Hoover earlier in the year... the Cubs eventually were going to win some games against them.
The only domination I have seen that lasted all year was Reds vs Astros in 1995, Reds vs Padres and Braves in 1980. It was a joke how well the Reds played and destroyed those teams.

I do not think it is too much to ask for the Reds to win 2 out of 3 against the Brewers....is it? Did the Reds already clinch something since those 7 games against STL and LA? They seem to be taking it pretty easy since then.

Even Ludwick after the 2nd game said there seemed to be a lack of focus.
In the middle of September with a chance to still win the division and having to still possibly stave off Washington?....there is a possible lack of focus.
Not the randomness of baseball.

Nice of Surfer Joe Cool manager to finally see that. I thought he did when he had Chapman go 2 that one game.

I also want to hear what Walt has been doing since the beginning of the season and some explanation as to why making moves during a season is destroying some team chemistry or are they really that strapped for cash.

Ryan Ludwick is a great guy, and I like him a lot as a player. I was in favor of re-signing him this past offseason. But the way the Reds handled the situation after he was injured on Opening Day has been detrimental to this teams World Series chances, IMO. That sort of injury is tough for anyone, but especially a 35 year old. The Reds really couldn't have thought he would come back and be the same guy he was last year. He has a .688 OPS and his bat looks slower.

I'm still surprised they let the Pirates acquire Marlon Byrd.

This may well be true, but it also means baseball has all the charm and fascination of watching a roulette wheel.

No thanks. I'll take history and narrative and character and glory, you can celebrate randomness.

Fortunately it's a big sport and there's room for both of us.

For those that didn't see it, BP bunted down the first base line to advance Choo, turned around to run back to the dugout, then decided to jog back to first to high-five the fielders glove and record himself out.

Also Votto hit a sac fly, 1-0 Reds.

I take no pleasure in a man's health not being well. Clearly after last year....he is taking it easy. I understand that. Sometimes the rest of the team seems to also be taking it easy.

The Melatonin Gang would be an appropriate nickname for this team, for most of this year.

So I guess your position is that the ebb and flow doesn't show us much. All teams have ups and downs. You are what you are and it evens out over the long season.

I don't disagree. It's unusual for the season long trends to be de-railed at the end.

However the season long trend for the Reds is that they have the fifth best record in the NL. So what they are is top third of the NL, as long as they hold on to that spot.

It top third satisfies the fans, that's fine. It doesn't satisfy me, but I'm a tough grader.

If the Reds make the one-game playoff, they need to seriously think about starting Homer Bailey.

He's a strong finisher and is missing bats better than Latos in September.

Of course, assuming the Reds have time to adjust their rotation.

I think the Reds next year should make some changes, add some battle tested veterans who hold up better in big games.

When you put together last year's Giants series and this current stretch, you get the feeling that the Reds have too many players who just don't step up in the limelight.

I don't want to say they choke because it's a loaded word that upsets people. But the team needs more players who will rise to the occasion.

I don't think that's true. The Reds were destroying weaker teams most of the year. They were 13-3 against the Cubs and won most of their early Brewer games.

Now they have been having deep trouble with those teams.

Anyone who denies the Reds problems in big games has to consider their recent playoff appearances. This is the one close pennant race and they are having big trouble.

I don't know what is in the Reds' collective minds, not saying they are in a panic. But if choking means you can't win the big one, well, there are signs so far.

Yes, if they feel more confident against good teams that will help them if they make the playoffs beyond a wild card game.

But it's generally not the best thing to be losing to the Cubs and the Brewers in a September pennant race. I find that to be a negative trend.

Hopefully they get it going.

I just mean in the sense that all season they have gone on runs where they play near perfect baseball (last week against STL and LA) then play like they are just going through the motions. It has happened all season I don't think opposition really makes a difference.
