Totally forgot about the DH this week. I would have put Billy out in CF and let Choo get a "day off" by being the DH. Oh well, at least Ludwick is the DH.

I did too. It took me a second to realize why Ludwick and Heisey were both in the game.

I would feel a lot more confident if the Reds' Designated Hitter was Pernell Whitaker.

A late scratch to the Astros' lineup. Mattress Mac will be leading off. He will 'Save you money'. A Houston institution.

Seeing Bill Devane makes me want to go buy some gold. He was truly outstanding in the incredible movie "Rolling Thunder". Not bad in a brief (very brief) appearance in the terrific "Payback".

Hasn't he changed his delivery this time? I think I heard that on the radio over the weekend. That's what I'm most interested in seeing. Can he still be the same pitcher, using a different delivery.

Yeah, but he's been out for almost 3 months at this point, compared to just a few weeks the other times. If he's not ready now he won't be back until spring anyway, so it's a low risk, high reward situation. I honestly believe an effective Cueto and Marshall makes the Reds maybe not the favorite, but right up there to win the pennant if they can get past the coin flip game.

Talking about 'must win' games in the next few series. Said he mentioned that to Dusty on the radio show. Dusty said, "wait a minute. Man on second for the Astros.A hitter is supposed to wait for a pitch that he can hit hard. Another result of this approach (the most optimal) is more strikeouts. But since strikeouts are statistically no worse than any other type of out, it matters not.

The K wasn't good, mind you. But it was still only one out, and after the AB there was still a chance for a sac fly or fielder's choice to score a run. (Or a single to score two runs!)

Yes. Right.

But since Frazier was going to try and hit the ball; and wasn't going to strike out on purposes; and was seeking contact or a walk; what difference does it make?

Even if a K is sometimes better, nobody tries for one, nor should he. The objective should be solid contact or a walk. Not a K. Whole argument is academic.

Big projects, important assignments, pulling through a sale with a big account...important things for every employer/employee are usually emphasized and not treated as the usual fair, without overtly discussing the pressure.

It would've been ok for Dusty to say, "yeah, we've got some big games coming up...we still have a shot at the division, we need to play well." And maybe he said something like that, I don't know. Marty chose not to disclose that part of the discussion, if so.

It's a matter of tone. You don't want to set a tone of high pressure; just a sense of importance. I trust Baker to set the proper tone.

I agree...if Ludwick had been more adept in that situation, he could have made it to third. But he is slow. He got hurt sliding into third. He might not have seen the ball well. It is moot. He hesitated on a ball that got away from the catcher. Cozart has to be looking ahead on the play.

He's saying that he doesn't like to overemphasize any one game to his players. Some might react by putting pressure on themselves.

Marty is saying that the players know how critical the game is so, if they are going to feel pressure, the manager's words won't make much difference.

One of the things I like about mlb.tv (aside from being able to watch most of the Reds games that way since I'm out of market) is that you can pick the home or away feed.

How to tell you've dialed into the Cards' feed for a Rockies game:

Tying run on 2nd, one out. Top 8.

I was arguing that they should be gunning for the division too lol. Thus making this game essentially a must-win. As will be tomorrow, Wednesday, and probably all the Mets games.

What about the Pirates games, a team ahead of the Reds?

I think we are up to all must wins at this point.

With time running out if you want the division I would argue the Reds can't lose more than 2 more games. But that doesn't make them all must wins. Especially since we have seen the ironic performance of this team vs. LAD and MIL.

I hold "must" to a high standard.

I hold "must" to a high standard. The most realistic path to 9-2 the rest of the way is with 2 losses to the Pirates I would say. But yeah, any scenario that results in 9-2. Not much hope otherwise for the division.

And this one belongs to the Reds!

just got home. Absolutely pitiful crowd. It wouldn't surprise me if the Reds fans out numbered the Astros fans. I got a good laugh when I saw them attempt to start a wave. I mean there were whole sections empty. LOL.

Cueto looked pretty darned good. I said before the game that I'd pull him at 80 pitches. Nearly spot on I think. The only hitter that really looked bad was Luddy. He was swinging for that short porch in left and just looked horrible.

1-0 for me. :O) Let's get 2 more fellas!

YES! I just saw the Stl final. :O) It was 1-1 when I left the juice box. Nice! Grabbed that game back on both of them. *grin*

I may be in the minority...but I still say we take the division.

Btw...just thought I'd toss this in. Batting practice was a blast. It was an absolute HR show...and the featured player is one you'd NEVER expect. Corky. He was POUNDING the ball. Too funny.

Someone back me up here.

On the wide shot Luddy was 10 ft off second as Cozart was sprinting toward 2nd halfway there.

Kal's right. But to be fair...it was because the ball squirted away from the catcher...Luddy could see the play, Cozy couldn't. Ryan started towards third and that's when Cozart was watching him...then he took his eyes off Ryan. Mistake on Cozart without a doubt. But considering he knocked in 4 runs...I think he made up for it.

I like to play with fire. I'd consider sending Partch out and see if he can finish this. I like my big dogs to get some rest when they can.

This is a home game basically for Logan. I'm glad they went with him. He had a TON of family in attendance. So did Hamilton and Bruce.

Lets assume JC pitches well in his next start and throws 100 pitches. Do we consider starting him in the post season?

Leake vs. Cueto? Sounds like a pretty easy decision to me.

Cueto looked a lot better than I thought he would. I thought he would be rusty and struggle with is control. It helped facing the Astros but still a good performance. I would thin he would start Sunday against the Pirates. Maybe go 90 pitches or so. Reds just have to keep winning. I doubt they catch two teams but you never know as long as you win.

That's the plan. I also loved watching the guys during BP...they clearly enjoy each others company. They were having a blast pre-game. I love seeing that. Hamilton & Choo are good friends. Chapman & Corky. Sometimes the connections are surprising. The 2 guys who warm up separately are the 2 guys you wouldn't expect. Luddy & Phillips.

No, I mean starting, like game 163 starting, like Cueto instead of Latos or Homer.
