Not surprised Ludwick is resting tonight. Dusty rested him frequently last year, even before this year's injury. He's played four in a row, three in the outfield as I recall.

Thought we'd see Heisey again but Baker decided to load up on lefty hitting tonight with Paul and switcher Robinson.

Three in a row lefties, four out of five, Dusty has turned a new leaf. And righties have a higher OPS against Lyles this season (lifetime lefties a bit better). Lyles also has a higher OPS against him at home.

All very small samples, but Votto, Cozart, Frazier have hit Lyles hard, among those playing tonight.

Pretty good baseball day imho. Caught the Nats/Braves makeup game. Attendance was abysmal but that means you get a better shot at foul balls (nada) or bazook'ed t-shirts (2!). And, because I'm well on record here with my strong belief that the Nats are irrelevant to the Reds this year, it was a fun game to see the way it ended.

5-0 for us. Loving this game.

And, the Padres are handling the Bucs. Pittsburgh may well be a stop on the road to St Louis for us.

And also they improve on their hitting with RISP with two out, in which they are tenth in the league, and hitting with men on base with two out, in which they are twelfth.

Since hitting with RISP includes those at bats with RISP and 2 outs, the latter stat isn't particularly meaningful. I assume that their hitting with RISP and either 0 or 1 outs is even better.

2nd in runs scored in the NL, tied for 4th in OPS, shows they are getting it done, generally, when it matters.

This also means when we complain about the low scoring games it is happening across the league to all teams or else the Reds wouldn't be near the top of the league in OPS in both those categories. Pitching is dominating the game right now - it's not just our team struggling to score at times.

You go to the Cards boards and they constantly complain about their ability to consistently score runs.

The lead the NL in runs scored by a large margin, based solely on their out of this world hitting with RISP, which shouldn't be a repeatable skill.

Since the all star break, they lead the NL in runs scored but ranked 10th in OPS.

I'm watching the Astros feed on Extra Innings. It looked like Phillips hooked his leg on the plate before he was tagged. Ugly slide but it looked to me like he was clearly safe.

Maybe a different angle looks different. Whatever, hopefully irrelevant play.

It was a nice throw and block of the plate, no doubt.

But it was also about an 85 per cent effort from BP. And the purist in me doesn't like that. This isn't the NBA.

Thing is the ump had perfect position and was right over top of the play. I'll go with his call. Camera angles can be really deceptive on calls like that.

Blocking the plate without the ball should be illegal. Probably is against the rules technically, but the catcher argues he's just trying to catch the ball so it's allowed.

But if the intent is to prevent the runner from scoring without the ball in catcher's hands, it should not be allowed.

That'd be way too revolutionary for MLB to even consider. Blocking w/o the ball has been the norm for...I don't know...maybe 200 years? So can't change that. Same as using replay for balls/strikes.

I'm not sure it's been the norm throughout baseball history. It's the norm now, for sure.

Just seems ridiculous to me to let a player without the ball simply block the plate.

What if on a single to right field, Votto simply sat on first base and didn't let the baserunner have any access to the bag.

• The ’64 Phils had a 6 ½ game lead with 12 games to play – and blew it. They lost eight games in the standings in 10 days.

• In 2012, the Texas Rangers were up five games with nine games to go -- and the Oakland A's caught them, beating the Rangers six times head-to-head among those final nine.

• In 2011, the Atlanta Braves led St. Louis by 4 1/2 games with 10 to play; the Boston Red Sox led Tampa Bay by 4 games with 12 to play. The chasers -- St. Louis and Tampa Bay -- won the wild-cards slots.

But the comparison to Strasburg is a bit apples-to-oranges. They both began their careers in 2010 but Strasburg has missed a ton more time due to injury and shutdown. Career stats:

Of course wins are a very imperfect metric for pitching effectiveness but both have won 38% of their games. FWIW.

Recent and limited history is no guarantee of future trajectory. Big raw talent difference in terms of pitching skiils and strengths. Durability isn't a talent; it's a characteristic. So, IMHO, not so apt a comparison but good people can disagree.

More importantly, Leake is doing great and that's a wonderful thing. We need him if we're going to get this division, make it to and through an LDS, etc.

It's really great to see Leake pitch well these last few outings. It would have been a shame if he slid back with a second half slump.

Big surprise for the Reds this year, great progress by Leake.

#1 is largely true. Leake has pitched much more and reasonably well, especially this year/lately.

#2 is my point and where we diverge. I'd love it if you were right but my rational part would never take that bet. Hence why I'd make the trade in a second. But guessing you wouldn't.

BTW, there's absolutely no way the Nationals would make such a trade. I'd guess you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find a knowledgeable analyst/journalist who'd agree with you here. But, you are right that it's all about the future and what one expects to happen so uncertain.

You mean all those knowledgeable analyst/journalists who predicted the Nats would be playing the Angels in the World series? :)

Seems like a kind of irrelevant question with other agenda. But, putting that aside, answer this: Would you refuse a trade of Leake for Strasburg straight up?

That play certainly gives a whole new meaning to the name Astros!Where I thought they couldn't top the botched bunt play to quickly summarize the Astros suckitude of the current era, this here is a perfect video metaphor of this historically bad time for the franchise.

Lets put it this way, before even considering such a trade I'd want Strasberg to be checked out by the Mayo Clinic and then I'd want a second opinion from Mt Sinai. And assuming He got a clean bill (which I doubt he would get), I'd have to really think about it.

The real question is, going back 3 years, putting aside all the hype, and putting aside the bias in favor of a guy who throws in the high 90s as opposed to a real pitcher, and knowing what they've produced from 2010-2013, do you draft Strasberg or Leake? Particularly in light of the fact that Strasberg cost 7 mill and Leake 2 mill.

If i'm pretending I can redo that draft, I'm picking Trout. Anything else is just a tease.
