Big win against former Flyer coach Brian Gregory, in Atlanta to boot.
Pierre wasn't much of a factor with early foul trouble, they hoisted a ton of 3s (not particularly effectively) and got out rebounded, but won going away.
Hard to get a good read on the team thus far. Pierre, Sibert and Sanford look like difference makers in the A10. Oliver has been a spectacular jack-of-all-trades.
Gonzaga up next. Should get a better understanding where they stand playing Few's Dogs.

How did Gregory get that job at Georgia Tech? He was awful at Dayton, so it stood to reason that he'd be awful at Georgia Tech, too. I could have saved them a lot of money and four or five years of pain if they'd just asked.

Though I grew up in a UK family, spent most of my childhood in Lexington, and attended UK, I'll always have a soft spot for UD. When my dad's military career ended in 1965, he took a job with Frigidaire and we moved from Fort Hood, TX to Middletown, OH for a year, and then to Germantown, OH for a few years. As a sports loving family we watched basketball games on TV when available (I'm thinking it was Channels 19 & 5 back in those days?), but my first live games were at UD Arena. I'll never forget walking through the doors the first time and looking down at that giant arena. It was one of those moments that feel like yesterday, even though I'm 50 now. I don't remember any other details, but I do remember names like Don May (the first year I got to go) and Donald Smith (the last year we lived in that area and attended UD games). If I live to be 100 years old, I'll still have a soft spot for UD basketball and Don Donoher. My dream national championship game every year is UK vs UD. Go Cats! and Go Flyers!

Gregory wasn't awful; certainly not as successful as UD fans would have liked, but he wasn't awful.
At the time, GTech was going to owe a lot of money to Paul Hewitt, heck they may still be paying him to not coach there, so they couldn't go with the big national names you see turn up every offseason. If things hadn't soured so much towards the end of BG's tenure, I'm not convinced that BG would have left. However, both sides needed a fresh start, BG needed a new place to sell his poor offense, solid defense, hard rebounding style, UD needed someone who wasn't stagnanting.
With all that said, BG was a great amasador for UD. He was highly active in the community, ran a clean program, kids graduated, 3 of his players have now played in the NBA w/ a 4th (searcy) that was an end of camp cut w/ the 76ers last season (don't know what he's doing now) so the level of player rose a bit since Purnell resurected the program from the Jim OBrien's ashes.
Tech was dealing with their own issues when the fired Hewitt, seems like they had player issues, team wasn't working hard, etc... From what I read heading into the game, seems like most fans are happy w/ the direction the team is taking. I doubt BG takes them to the top of the ACC, his prodical is middle of the road finishes in conference and decent OOC play. probably good enough to get him a few more seasons at Tech, but if they stagnant like his UD teams did, he'll be looking for work somewhere else.

2 NCAA Tournaments in 8 years is awful, yes. Particularly since he was actually a pretty good recruiter. The "highlight" of his time there was winning the tallest midget contest in his seventh year. (OK, the real highlight was knocking the stuffing out of Huggins' team in the NCAA Tournament, which was beautiful, but the NIT was #2).

After looking turrible in the first half, the Flyers are up 4 on Gonzaga with 8 minutes left after opening up the second half with a 10-2 run to get back in it, because it was looking quite grim for a bit.

Great win for Dayton. I hear people talk about Gonzaga being overrated every year, but the only thing they've ever done against my Muskies is kick our asses, so I'd be thrilled to have the win Dayton got yesterday.
I think Dayton beats Baylor. I haven't been impressed with Baylor yet on the young season, and I think Dayton is just a better team. That would be a nice back to back taking out the Zags and the Bears.

I think it was really an extension of the fustration many had w/ the end of the Gregory era. Fans got sick of doing good to great OOC, then finishing up 7-9 to 9-7 in conference play and missing out on the big dance. Archie didn't have a full roster either of his first two seasons, depth was a major factor. He also had to deal with the growing pains of a 1st time coach. UD fans were ready for something more, ready to climb another step or two above where BG had the program a few seasons ago.
This year's squad has a full complement of depth. Archie has grown as a coach and is making a lot of great adjustments in games, frankly he coached circles around BG in Atlanta. Never judge a fan bases' assessment of their coach based upon their message board. There were plenty of times random X fans wanted to run Sean Miller out of town, I see Gonzaga fans complaining about Few and look how much success he's had.

Flyers have a great team this year, but I still think it's a shame for the Dayton community that UD refuses to play home and homes with Wright State. They both have wonderful arenas and it was a great thing they had going.
The Gem City Jam was so much fun. It was something I looked forward to every season.
I can't think of many other cities that both have D1 basketball schools where the two teams don't play each other every year.

When does Archie get canned? I am not saying he should, but it has been awhile since this team made the tourney (08-09). As a Dayton fan, I expect a tourney appearance every 2-3 seasons. The team started out so well this year, they just had to be solid in conference play. The last few weeks have been a joke. If the same happens next year, I think it might be time to move on.

Can't see it getting much better this season. I wouldn't be so critical if they were giving maximum effort, but I think this team is underachieving and it begins with the coach.
I'm ok with giving Miller another season, but if next year is more of the same then the program will need a new direction.

And we're good again!
Took care of the Bonnies in Olean (big shakes that is).
Soft spot in the schedule coming up with three or four very winnable games ahead (home versus Rhode Island and LaSalle, followed by contests at Duquesne and St. Joe's). Seems entirely plausible that this team could be 19-9 or even 20-8 preceding the March 5 death by asphyxiation in St. Louis.
Now that we've been afforded a hint of optimism, I fully expect Archie & co. to flush this season over the next two weeks.

This four game winning streak has more to do with the level of competition they are playing than anything else. The last 4 games on the schedule will tell if this team is anything more than it was during the beginning of non-conference play.

Holding your breath with this team could be hazardous to your health. To call the defense a sieve would be a insult to well-constructed sieves the world over.
I don't think anyone who's followed the Flyers this season have high hopes for the team, but there's still some excitement to be had and some slim hopes for a NCAA tourney bid. They'll more than likely be waxed by both UMass and St. Louis, but the other four remaining games (vs. LaSalle, at Duquense, at St. Joe's and vs. Richmond) could go either way. My expectations remain low, but with some consistent play (spurred by a hint of effort on D) and a run in the A10, the NCAA is a possibility.
What's probably most disconcerting is there isn't much reason for increased expectations for next year. Losing Oliver and Sanford will hurt, and save some previously unforeseen improvement from the sophomore class, it'll be the same helter-skelter productivity on offense coupled with no defense and a glaring lack of consistency from the bigs.

Stole a victory at the Consol Center over the feisty, but not particularly talented, Duquesne Dukes.
Steel yourself for a bumpy ride as we learn what the team is made up, closing the season with four top 50 RPI teams (@St. Joe's - 39, @St. Louis - 11, UMass - 13, Richmond - 47). The Flyers currently sit at 55 and are considered solidly on the bubble by tourney prognosticators.
As a long-time fan of the program, I've resolved myself to impending disappointment, but it should be an interesting watch over the next couple weeks, and we'll certainly learn something about Archie as a coach. Should be a fun close, especially considering where the program was four-to-six weeks ago.

Crushed by St. Joe's and that infernal ever-flapping bird (and their bald, squawking idiot of a coach). It never was a game. The Flyers were outclassed from the opening tipoff.
One victory and five losses against the top six teams in conference. Ahead, three games against top six teams. NIT or bust!

Too many Flyer fans got tricked into thinking this team had turned the corner during that 6 game winning streak, which had more to do with the level of competition they were playing.
This is the most frustrating Flyer team I can remember since the JOB years. The St. Joe's game was the epitome of the season. Non-existent defense, lack of urgency, lack of effort, and lack of toughness. Basically, the past three seasons of Archie.

Wow, biggest win of the season for the Flyers at St. Louis. I was seriously done with this team after the St. Joseph's debacle. I am so happy they have proven me wrong. They have won two huge must win games against top 20 RPI teams, and have one more at home against a good Richmond team. If they can win that one, I think this team is back on the good side of the bubble.

They put up a fight but in the end they couldn't rebound down the stretch and Florida hit some big shots.
Extremely proud of my Flyers. What a tourney!!!

I couldn't be prouder of how this team came together at the perfect time and how they represented the university. A really great group of kids who have made lasting memories for an entire city and fan base.
I was really down on this team during conference play, and wasn't a big fan of Archie. I think part of it was that I had a certain level of mistrust of him. He never really revealed much of himself. I could never tell if he was truly embracing the Flyer tradition. He has really come out of his shell during this run, and it's good to hear how much he loves it at UD. It's unrealistic to think he'll make it a career at Dayton, but I hope we can hang onto him for at least a couple more seasons.
What a great ride. Hopefully, it's just the beginning.

Love the direction of the Flyer program. Recently, picked up two commits; Xeryius Williams, a 6'8" shooter from Huber Heights Wayne, and Ryan Mikesell, a 6'6" swingman from St. Henry. Archie & co. continue to bring in length (both Williams and Mikesell can play down the positional ladder, with reports suggesting Mikesell often does the ballhandling for his high school team). Love the flexibility of the regime's first three classes. Allows for all kinds of matchup problems in-conference and an ability to size up the bigger teams OOC. They've got one more scholarship available for the 2015 class. It'll be interesting to see which direction they go.
