Last night, Family Guy killed off one of its most popular characters, the beloved family dog Brian Griffin.

I have two trains of thought as far as this is concerned:

1. Interest in the show was starting to slip, so they "kill" off Brian only to bring him back as the world rejoices (and viewership climbs with the interest).

2. Interest in the show was starting to slip, so they get desperate and shake things up, leading to killing off Brian and bringing in a new character.

As a big fan of the show, but as someone that hasn't kept up to date with it in recent years, I was shocked by this move. This is like Scooby Doo dying! I'm devastated :(.

Stewie will rebuild his time machine and go back to before Brian getting hit by the car.

There is no way Brian is gone for good.

Why do cats get 9 lives and dogs just 1? That's unfair.

But all dogs go to heaven. I'm pretty certain there aren't any cats up there. :)

Stewie will wake up one morning and find Brian in the shower and realize it was all a dream.

I read the thread title initially as "Blake Griffin Dies". That was pretty shocking for a couple seconds.

I get trying to shake the show up but this is the dumbest possible way to do it, why not kill off some useless characters? Like Lois, Meg or Chris?

Brian and Stewie are the two funniest characters on the show, so killing off one of them makes zero sense. I don't like this at all. I always thought Brian and Stewie should have gotten their own spin-off show.

I kinda thought the entire Griffin family should have gone years ago.

I'm hearing FOX has announced Brian will be returning to the show soon?

Guessing that between Family Guy, Cleveland Show, American Dad, and Ted that Seth McFarlane has probably burned out a bit and wants to let FG go finally. American Dad is moving to TBS next year, Cleveland has been cancelled and is moving back to Spooner Street, so if FG went away well he'd have a much more open calendar and could create some new things. I've heard rumblings he wants to quit it.

Brians back. I guess the fan outrage has won out.

Nah, fans had nothing to do with it, just trolling from MacFarlane.

Yeah.... the lead time to produce an episode of FG is pretty long. This was the plan from the start.

It was the plan all along from what I read last night. Seth even tweeted 'Did you think we'd really kill Brian? We'd have to be bleeping high'

Yes Seth, there are times when I am convinced that is the only way you come up with some of your ideas.
