Meanwhile, watching the Reds, I wonder if Phillips is playing hurt -- which he does way too often -- or just slumping. Reds really could use a better hitter between Votto and Bruce. Maybe someday it will be Votto/Bruce/Mesoraco.

I think the default in that situation is the throw to the pitcher covering. Pitcher was slow getting over. By the time Rizzo realized he had to make the play himself, it was too late. Both are to blame.

I guess I don't understand this. Phillips got a pass for a lousy second half because of hand issues. Now he gets a pass because of back issues.

Either the guy should sit and heal or he is healthy and should hit. It's one or the other.

He's hitting between Votto and Bruce, very important spot, he's making out after out, so either sit it out or hit the ball.

I agree with that. Cole had NO business running his mouth though. Gomez's hot-dogging saved his HR Allowed stat-line. If he'd have busted it out of the box, he probably still gets his HR as an inside-the-park variety. Instead he was sitting on 3rd.

The Pirates are starting to reach a LaRussa/Carp era Cardinals level of whine lately.

Sorry to belabor the argument, Charles, but I think Phillips is a fairly big problem right now because he is hitting third, between Votto and Bruce.

His 18Ks and 2 BBs is just not acceptable for a third place hitter.

Yes, he's not Cozart, who is hitting like a pitcher. But BP is a fairly serious issue in the third spot, unless he turns it around.

And Phillips is responsible for WHERE he hits in the order?

Nice work from the bottom of the order. He deserves to hit higher, but I actually like having DM lower in the order to provide competent hitting.

Mes has never OBP's .300 or above. Even an OBP of .330 would be a huge jump. I'm not going to be convinced by a hot few weeks or a month. Plenty of guys start to slump and don't recover well.

I'm impressed this year, but I'm not jumping on the bandwagon yet.

As far as his career path, Mes had one very strong minor league season after some weak ones. I don't see some long-standing pattern.

Mes' first three years in the minors weren't very good offensively. Then in 2010 he had a .900 plus OPS playing for three teams and also did well in 2011.

So I see a guy who struggled for three years and then did much better. I don't see any real pattern to this, but if your point is that he improved after a few bad years, yes, certainly he did.

Still I think the majors are different and some guys make it and some don't. As I said, I always thought Mes had better strike zone judgment than some of the others. And he has excellent power.

So I'm hopeful, but not sold until he has a longer period of good hitting. Which I hope he does have.

Injuries were a factor in every period of extended struggle.

Could be, but he had over 330 PAs in his first two years of full season ball so he must have been healthy enough to play. That's a pretty full minor league season for a catcher.

The fact is, Mesoraco recovered, and had two very good minor league years before coming up. This hopefully will translate to the major leagues, but I don't think it's been proven quite yet.

I saw a guy who was learning how to CATCH. Hitting wasn't even remotely important to them at that time. He needed to learn the art of catching. He and the coaches have repeatedly said this was the case.

Agreed on the leap from the minors to majors is HUGE. I think one of the things you're overlooking is his adjustments. You keep looking at his full seasons. He struggled to start a league every time. Struggled BAD. But he'd adapt and improve considerably. His numbers may not look good at the end of the year but that's because of how low he started.

Anyway, I'll drop it and get back to the game. (btw...we don't seem to be getting along lately. Hopefully nothing I've done. I've got nothing but respect for you Kc)

But as I've said now several times there are many things about Mes I really like. However, in his first two years, it seemed like he might be the type of hitter who destroys lefty pitching but has trouble with righties. mth has noted this frequently.

The early stages of Mesoraco's professional career did indeed test his character. After being taken with the 15th overall selection in the first round of the 2007 draft, expectations were immediately high, but he battled a thumb injury that reduced his effectiveness, leaving some to question if the jump from high school to pro ball was too steep for this player.

During his time in Dayton, Mesoraco continued to battle thumb injuries. At times, the pain caused Mesoraco to release the bat at the end of his swing.

I don't know if anyone answered this, but I do recall Mesoraco having issues with his thumbs very early in his minor league career.

I love how the Cubs fans screamed like their guy had just hit one to the rooftops when in reality Hamilton had to take a step or two in to make the catch. Watch baseball often, Cubbie fans?

LOL. To be fair...I live and breath baseball and I do the exact same thing at a live ballgame. I get fooled all the time.

It doesn't have to be high (run production) as long as the run prevention stays on point.

Yeah, but if the OPS type stats are good, you'd like to see good run production to go along with it. No reason to waste good offense by not scoring.

Also let's give these pitchers some breathing room with more scoring.

I'm guessing Homer will probably go 6....please no Hoover, Christiani or Ondrusek today.

Nah...it'll just spoil them. 1 run games keeps 'em on their toes. :O)

Man! Homer is smoking the ball today. Another hard liner. An out, but still.

I agree on Ondrusek and Christiani. But Hoover was good last year, especially on the road as I recall. He needs to get work despite his slow start.

Reds very much on the right side of Pythag, even w/ the offense suffering early on....

He's still batting like he wants to go 9. Fingers crossed he gets 7.
Hamilton well hit line out to center.

Excellent AB from Joey. Single to left center after working the count full.

Billy hit that on the screws, but it held up in the air too long.

Joey w/ a sharp single to LC.

Let's go Brandon. You're the only one without a hit today. Get on the board!

Or not. K swinging to end the inning. 5-0 it remains.
