Example #1,327,984 of why earned run stats aren't very meaningful. Official scorers are a joke.

Another problem with official scorers is that they tend to minimize errors for their guys while giving them hits on errors other times to inflate statistics. I was a fan of John Stockton, but he got some very generous assist tallies while playing at home. So, it's not just a baseball thing. Good ol' human element!

Let me rephrase then. Reds look like a contending team.

Btw, what so you think of the Cards and Red Sox so far?

I don't follow the Cards and Red Sox. Actually, if I were a fan, I wouldn't be that concerned. I'd be delighted by their great successes as recent World Series teams.

As for the Reds, they may be a contending team by season's end. But to say they look like a contending team so far? I'm sorry, but I do not see it.

Btw, what so you think of the Cards and Red Sox so far?

Clearly, the Cards are just in a funk. They've got a potent offense that is just having a hard time with it's power. I mean they are BY FAR the class of this division and will win it walking away.

The Reds however are just what they seem to be, a sub .500 team. They've got 2 decent hitters and then it's just black hole after black hole.

And let me add one last thing...got sarcasm?

What should Brandon have done during that AB? Should he have made the pitcher work and let that meatball sail past? Too often, we jump on players who swing at the first pitch. If they see a 90 mph fastball right in the center of the strike zone....IMO they should swing...HARD. Brandon got under it some but made good contact. Adjust to the fact that he is going more away from you then inside and GO the other way.

Basically, while they will hit occasionally, they are not a terrible offensive team -- but the Reds need good starting pitching to win. Hard to think of many games this year when they "outscored" the opposition.

Reds have focused on pitching and defense. That only works if you get excellent pitching and defense.
