Maybin reminded me of the 2007 draft.

How crazy was this first round?

Just Upton
Alex Gordon
Ryan Zimmerman
Ryan Braun
Troy Tulowitski
Cameron Maybin
Andrew McCutcheon
Jay Bruce
Jacoby Ellsbury
Matt Garza
Colby Rasmus
Clay Bucholtz
Jew Lowrie

The Mariners selected Jeff Clement with the 3rd overall pick. Ouch.

Sounds like Cingrani isn't quite ready, he would have pitched tomorrow best case.

As a result, Simon is bumped to tomorrow and Francis pitches game 2 tonight.

Also seems that Christiani was sent down. That one I don't get since Reds were allowed 26 players for DH game. So didn't have to send anyone down for Francis.

Latos retroactively on 60-day DL to make room on forty man roster for Francis. No big deal there since he obviously was going to miss 60 days from beginning of season.

The Christiani move is the interesting one because it wasn't required for Francis. So the Reds must be making a player switch beyond just today's games.

The big problem with this offense lately is a complete lack of power hitting. So the Reds are forced to rally, which they don't do well.

LOL, "right around the middle of the pack," nice spin.

Reds going into today were 11th in HRs in the NL with 32 and below league average in SLG at .384 (league average of .388).

Reds play in a home run paradise. These numbers are unacceptable if they hope to compete.

As for the return of the injured, it should help if they come back healthy, but right now the Reds have been suffering by a lack of long balls. We'll see how the future goes.

Only thing I looked at was HR's. And I saw around 5 or 6 teams below us. It was just a quick glance. Didn't even look at slugging. FYI, I wasn't attempting to "spin" anything. I just don't think lack of power is our biggest offensive problem.

My point was that when Jay & Devin come back, those numbers will climb. But regardless, we've really struggled putting hits together in groups to plate runs. I'd love to see us hit more HR's....but I don't want to see the team rely on HR's to score.

Looks pretty good to me.

Key for him is to stay healthy and, if injured, to sit until he is healthy. Guy plays injured too often. Reds might rest him once in awhile when the team is at full strength.

He remains just a fabulous defender to watch. Worth the price of admission.

I see no reason to give up a major home field advantage. Reds play in GABP. Short right field. Home run stadium.

Right now the Reds are (slightly) being outhomered at home. Not the way to use a home field advantage.

Why did the Yanks load up no lefty power all these years? To take advantage of the home run with a short RF porch.

No, I don't want the Reds' offense to be totally built around the home run, no I'm not in favor of an extreme.

But the Reds should be able to win the home run battle in their home run stadium by a fair margin. And generally they lack the on base skills to forfeit the power part of the game.

FYI:Mesoraco has a solo blast down in Louisville today.

Correction: It was for Louisville, not in Louisville. They are playing in Norfolk.

Happy about that! I have tix to see L-ville in Durham on Tuesday, was hoping he or another star would be on a rehab and get to see them, but not looking like it.

The Padres really are no match for Johnny Cueto. Even in GABP.

I give the Reds' staff and Cueto enormous credit for getting him back to this form.

_Sir_Charles_
05-15-2014, 02:49 PM

Let me be clear. I don't think the answer is to load up on power hitters. I think the answer is to load up on GOOD hitters. What this team lacks is guys who can hit for average and get on base. As a team, we've got PLENTY of power. It's just that some of it is sitting on the DL.

We have a 3 hr game today and we jump 3 places in the team ranking. I just think that too often this season we have a leadoff double and then nothing else in the inning. Or a 2 out single, and nothing else. I'm not concerned though. I can see the team gelling already.

Do you let Johnny finish? On one hand, he's only at 99 pitches and of course I want the guy to get a CGSO. On the other hand, he's averaged 108 pitches a start and I want to keep him healthy and fresh deep in to the summer. We're up 5 runs and don't need him on the mound to win. My head says pull him, my heart says let him finish what he started.

The big problem with this offense lately is a complete lack of power hitting. So the Reds are forced to rally, which they don't do well.

It's a GABP team, it needs to hit for more power at home.

Phillips complied just as I was typing this.

For what it's worth, the Reds are 4th in the NL in SLG at home.

With Francis going the second game is not a sure win. But it's an important game.

The Reds have a tough schedule, with more road games, and some tough matchups the next month. At Washington, seven with LA, a Cards series, etc.

They shouldn't lose two of three at home to SD, need to go after it in Game 2.

Agree and a lot of skeptism on Billy was based on one season, last year. He did have some good years in the middle level minors and did show good hitting skills at some levels.

He needs to walk more but he's so young, he'll improve that too. Very exciting guy to have on the ballclub.

I've been impressed with how very few times he's been fooled recently. The first few weeks, he was getting fooled on everything and lunging at breaking balls in the dirt. Lately though, he's not missing on much of anything. Even the outs have typically been hit well.

Yep. I would take a breezy 300 innings like Cueto is on pace for over 250 innings that involved several bases-loaded jams. I don't really think the number of innings is relevant. I do think the number of pitches over the course of a season can matter, but stress-free pitches simply don't take their toll the way they would when guys are constantly pitching from behind.

Cueto now has six straight starts of eight innings or more. No one has done that in the big leagues since Cliff Lee ran off a streak of 10 in a row in 2010 and no Reds pitcher has achieved that since Mario Soto in 1983.

Over his last 55 innings, Cueto has allowed only five runs to lower his Major League-leading ERA to 1.25 over a league-most 72 innings pitched.

To find the last Major League pitcher to start a season with at least seven innings pitched and two runs or fewer allowed over his first nine starts, one has to look back to the dead-ball era. Harry Krause of the 1909 Philadelphia Athletics did it in 10 straight starts, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

No Reds pitcher has worked at least seven innings in their first nine starts since Bucky Walters began 1944 with 20 in a row.

I know it'll come across as arrogant nationally (personally I think it's just solid confidence) but when asked today if he's the best pitcher in the majors right now, Cueto said...

"yes, because the numbers talk," Cueto said, according to assistant athletic trainer Tomas Vera, serving as his interpreter. "My numbers are going to talk for me. Everybody else is going to have to worry about their numbers. Every time I go on the mound, I do my job. I have to do my job to get the best numbers."
