I know after the big game people will be upset with Rocco sitting but I'm OK with giving him a rest every fifth game. If Pena and Cueto work well together I can live with it. Keeping Rocco rested won't hurt in the long run.

And Donald Lutz is going deep twice tonight.

"Nothing needs to be read into it," Price said. "The only thing is Bernadina hasn't played first base since A ball. He's been working out at it the last few days. We've had a catcher over there in Pena, who had very limited first base experience. And we have Lutz, who only played a couple of games at first base before we called him up."

MiLB games at 1B:

Lutz: 174
Bernadina: 0

Price got lucky last night. There were a couple plays by Bernie that could have cost the game.

Tonight's game marks the 1/3 point of this season. With the Padres scoring 4 runs in their game earlier today, the Reds are now tied with SD for the fewest runs scored in MLB.
Reds are averaging 3.45 runs per game. Can they pick it up in the remaining 2/3 of the season? Who knows.

So tell me Mr. Price...IF Lutz has already started a handful of games at 1B.....where has he been playing in the minors for these last few years?

Should he not be in LF then? Playing for Ludwick or platooning with him?

Mez should not be out of the lineup for no other reason than injury. If Pena has to catch Cueto then give Mez a 1st basemans glove. They played Bernadina there without any experience whatsoever so why not Mez? You have to have his bat in this lineup especially with Votto out and Bruce struggling bigtime.

And don't get me wrong...I realize that Mes hasn't had a full day off since he came back from the DL but it's not like this team is comfortably in playoff contention. What's worse is that he could picture Bernadina as a 1B.

I can't believe I'm about to throw out this sensational scenario, but is it possible that in spring training when guys get reps at other positions for emergency situations, perhaps Mesoraco didn't fare well at other positions? Just a thought.

He looked surprised that he hit it like he did and hesitated...you take the good with the bad with him, the former far outweighs the latter I think.

You will notice that the last two days Price has gone with more of a platoon lineup. Schumaker against righties over Ludwick in particular. He's used Santiago, Pena, Lutz against the righties to some extent.

For a team that has hitters not doing very well, this is smart.

Tomorrow he has Wade Miley a lefty who has bothered the Reds. The Reds haven't hit lefties a lick this year. Guessing Bruce will be the only lefty hitter to play. Possible even Jay will sit.

Also good that the Reds finally have a few switch hitters. Pena in particular. Also helps with these matchups.

I'm not really sure I can buy into the "other pitchers up their game when going against Cueto (or any other ace)".

I really doubt that guys can just turn it on like that. If some random pitcher had the ability to just say "okay, tonight I'm gonna throw 8 shutout innings" and actually do it, they'd be doing it a lot more often. And making a lot more money.

Johnny's .500 record is a byproduct of a bad offense and an otherwise good defense that screwed him in back to back starts.

1986 was one of the worst starts for a Res team that finished over .500 and was expected to compete......that I can remember.

They were 7-19...i think......and ended up 86-76. Main reason is they started playing Davis regularly and Rob Murphy, Frank Williams and John Franco were a great 3 man bullpen, back when you could go with just 3-4 guys on an almost daily basis and no one blinked an eye.
