I liked the fact that his batting average was more like normal for him that month. .250-.260. He's never going to be an above average bat...heck, he's probably never going to be an AVERAGE bat for shortstop. But coupled with his defense, he's normally an above average overall SS IMO.

No NL team can afford Cozart's current numbers in their lineup. Period. I don't care if he's Ozzie Smith defensively. The average shortstop, including subs, in the NL is at .700 OPS exactly according to ESPN. Cozart was at .553 coming into today.

They really don't even have to be really good. You can win in the postseason with a few great hitters, a hole or two and a lot of average hitters if you have pitching and defense. Let's be honest, the offensive juggernauts are not the teams that typically fare well in the postseason. Pitching & defense correlates much higher to postseason success.

The Cards replaced Pete Kozma as starter before the paint was even dry on the 2013 season.

And they had the second highest team OPS in the league last year, even with Kozma. But they wouldn't live with a subpar OPS starting shortstop.

And by the way, Kozma had a higher UZR defensively than Cozart last season. Didn't bother the Cards. They made the move.

Lecure is rested, but I think this would be three in a row for Brox. Tomorrow is off, so maybe ok.

Might even be a day for two innings of Chapman with tomorrow off.

I think they will let Simon go for awhile. He's thrown 93 pitches. He's hitting now.

I doubt Price wants to cover three innings with the pen. Broxton's gone two straight games. Just guessing that if Alfredo gets through seven, we'll see Lecure and Chappy.

Simon - 6 1/3 IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, 1 BB, 4Ks. Not bad for a 5th starter... I think he's overachieved all year and this is about what we should expect from him going forward. Hopefully, he can get back to the 'pen and take some of the workload off his arm in the second half of the season.

One of those things that always gets a chuckle out of me with the posts here. "I have a bad feeling" or a "good feeling" or "Bruce is going to homer here." Every once in awhile it's right, and the prognostications continue. No harm done, but humorous to me, as none of us know what's coming. If you do, you should head to Vegas immediately.

I thought it was funny seeing a Reds player be short and snap at the softball questions and comments from Jim Day. Either Luddy is pissed at the world, Day isn't as rosey off the air as he is on, or both.

I don't blame Luddy. he has better stats than Shumacher or Heisey (especially) and yet they are talking platoon? If there is someone to platoon with Ludwick, I'm all in favor. Platooning him with Heisey is simply ludicrous and with Shumacher is insane. I have to wonder where the "brain trust's" mind is going here.
