Dumb?

When Craig Biggio enters the Hall of Fame do you think he'll say the Astros were dumb?

Kind of doubt it.

Bad comparison. The only reason the Astros moved Biggio off of catcher was because of his speed. They didn't want him to lose that aspect of his game.

And by the way, he ended up dealing with quite a few injuries....only AFTER leaving catcher. Being a catcher doesn't automatically mean prone to injuries.

Tom Servo
06-03-2014, 07:53 PM
It's just way too early and convinent to say move Rocco from catcher because of something like not catching that ball. David Ross couldn't catch a throw from the outfield at the plate during his entire Reds career and he's still catching the majors.

The Astros switched Biggio because catching often results in injuries which might damage Biggio's physical abilities, including speed in his case.

Again, if the Reds ever shell out big bucks for Mesoraco's power, we'll see what they do with him defensively.

Any examples of these poor catching the ball cleanly skills? I mean, since he is so poor there have to be examples!

I don't agree with their assessment, but I will say that when there are not runners on, Devin will get lazy back there and begin stabbing at the ball instead of moving his feet properly and you'll quite often see him completely whiff on some pitches. This is part of what I'm talking about him cleaning up his technique. When it matters, he's quite good at his craft, but he gets sloppy too often for my tastes. Bad habits will work their way into moments that matter.

Today's throw from Bruce, not the first time that's happened. Didn't a bog game end last year on a dropped ball by Mesoraco? A few lazy passed balls in the Dodger series. Just off the top of my head.

Yeah, i know what ur talking about, but that's a lot of catchers with nobody on.

True....but I still don't like it.

He could also improve his framing techniques and also his form on setting a proper target early for the pitcher. Nothing major, but little things that could move his defense from average to WELL ABOVE average. He's a good solid defensive catcher right now. Always room for improvement....and I'm picky when it comes to defense (and catchers).

The facts on Cozart this year are obvious and require llittle focus. He's a .579 OPS hitter coming into tonight, on the heels of a big performance in the four solo home run game. This is simply unacceptable, it doesn't require focus or analysis.

What irks me is that he hasn't improved at all in the OBP department, still won't take a walk. Such an obvious issue, I see no movement toward taking more pitches.
