Heading down for my 3rd game of the season. Last night was so fun and this Phillies pitcher should be no match for the boys.

The last time I saw Donald Lutz live I caught his grand slam in Dayton and he signed the ball after the game for my boy.

Hate having Schumaker in LF. Prefer Lutz in LF and Pena at 1B. Brandon Phillips hitting third and Todd Frazier hitting 6th seems like a way to minimize the talent on the roster.

Hamilton CF
Pena 1B
Frazier 3B
Bruce RF
Mes C
Phillips 2B
Lutz LF
Cozart SS.

When Votto comes back, slide him in for Pena and use Ludwick or Heisey in LF against a RHP and that's the A team for the next 6 weeks IMO unless an acquisition occurs. Skippy should be Phillips caddy against tough RHP and give Phillips rest and not a starting corner OF even on a limited basis. He can play some CF when Hamilton needs rest.

7 strong innings by Homer.I'd let him go back out for the 8th with a short leash if he asks for it, which I think he usually does. He's still looking strong and at 108 pitches; I'd let him go another 10 or 15. Of course, there's something to be said about pulling him while he's still got a successful outing since they're not too common for him this season.

For all the outrage from some about Joey Votto being a .900 OPS singles hitter, could you imagine if the Reds were paying $24 million a season for a guy who currently is OPS'ing .780 with two homers in the middle of June? Yikes.

I still think he'll turn it on at some point, but even today where he pitched well, his command is still missing. Perplexing that he really hasn't had any games yet where he was truly 'on.'

Over the last couple years, I've come to the conclusion that any team that pays a player in his 30s for the production he had in his 20s is foolish to say the least.

For middle-diamond players, I agree. I think guys on the corners can sustain production to warrant that kind of money when one considers future value and a normal aging curve. But I said when they signed it that giving Cano that kind of money was insane.

He's gotten some luck, with some offense behind him, but if the Reds win today, that will be the fourth in a row that Homer has started. His numbers are only okay, right around his career averaged, but he just seems more focused lately.

Even corner fielders are susceptible. Pick any player not named Aaron or Williams and check out how productive they were after age 31-32 seasons. Many are productive enough to play into their late 30s, but the production definitely falls off from their 20s.

Even though price has done some questionable things the season isn't on him. Injuries and a lack of moves from Walt gets my vote. I want to see this team at full strength and get a better feel on price as a manager. Maybe he won't be forced into so many changes in ideas.

Certainly happy they're hovering around .500, but considering the DL monster and the under-performing from several players, I think describing the season as somewhat disastrous is not a stretch. Having said that, still plenty of time to avoid calling the entire season a disaster.

I think it's been a disappointment, but when I hear 'disaster season', I think of something like 2007 when the Reds on June 8th were 14 games under .500.

Also by looking that up I found out Homer made his major league debut exactly 7 years ago today against the Indians. I don't recall that being brought up in today's broadcast, but I may have missed it.
