It won't. Votto doesn't get paid to increase the team's offensive output

Although his absence is less significant against a right handed pitcher, we need a healthy Ludwick. The last few days we've seen the difference he makes when he is playing well.

That was nothing compared to when he tagged up and scored on what was basically a pop out to deep second base against the Cardinals early in the year. It's easy to sit and criticize when you don't have to face these guys. But actually having to pitch to 6-7 guys in a lineup that are on pace for 20+ homers isn't quite as easy as saying "don't nibble!"

And a lot of pitchers have bad innings against Toronto's lineup.

I do still think he should have just challenged Bautista with a fastball though and taken his chances. Not any easier with EE on deck, as we saw.

For the record, I agree he should have challenged Bautista in that situation, especially with a 3-2 count. Chalking up everything that's happened since as "nibbling" though was a little excessive. For one thing, Major League pitchers by design are almost always trying to nibble at the corners and at the knees or letters, because it's never a good idea to throw the ball straight down the middle with any regularity. So Latos wasn't pitching any differently than normal... just was not hitting spots.

I just think Mat was a little wild high that inning. Pitches were easier to hit.

Note on EE's throwing prowess:

I, myself, have never been able to throw overhand with accuracy. Found out years after washing out of high school ball that there are bones in my shoulders that angle down when they should angle out. It's not a big thing, but I do think that has an effect on how well I can throw overhand. (Underhand motions in bowling, softball pitching, volleyball serving, things like that I am VERY accurate and swing very straight...probably for the same reason.)

Anyway, I don't know that this is EE's issue or not. But it goes to show you how a small biological effect that you really have no control over can cause you success or failure in a given situation.
