From the "PLAYING RULES OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF Professional Base Ball Clubs; 1884" umpire rulebook:

RULE 50. The Batsman, on taking his position, must call for a "High Ball," a "Low Ball," or a "High or Low Ball," and the Umpire shall notify the pitcher to deliver the ball as required; such call shall not be changed after the first ball delivered

Why was this rule ever changed?

Also,

RULE 63. No Player except the Captain or his assisstant shall address the Umpire concerning any point of play, and any violation of this Rule shall subject the offender to a fine of five dollars by the Umpire.

$5 in 1884, would be what now? like $200 or $300?

In early baseball the pitcher's job was actually to assist the hitter in striking the ball. When Jim Creighton started throwing very hard and deceiving batters there were outcries of cheater and foul! One of the rules to assist pitchers to assist hitters was the high-low call. Balls required to walk were even increased a couple times to cut down on walks and fouls weren't strikes either to cut down strikeouts. After all the idea is for the batter to strike the ball. That was the thinking and it wasn't entirely gone by 1884. You would probably recognize fast pitch softball played without gloves more than today's baseball if you could go back and watch a game in 1884.

Once more the Rhinelanders assay a lengthy road trip. After a successful journey to Chicago, the Cincinnati club passed a joyous (and well lubricated) eve aboard their private train headed east through the night to Gotham. And the wheel of Fortuna continued to smile on the Vermillion Hose, as the Red Stockings dispatched Mathewson and Rusie on consecutive afternoons at the Polo Grounds. Today the Cincinnati club sends Mr. Simon to the mound to confront the lineup of the World's Champions. Wily McGraw sends Mr. Cain to the mound.

That Iglesias kid's delivery looks a little violent to me.

I wonder why he only had around 170 K in like 230 innings? With his stuff you'd think he'd be K'ing 9+ per 9.
